Quick question before I buy ('97 Boxter)
Car has 163,000 miles on it. All the IMS hype has me a little hesitant, but the price is pretty good. Owner states the car has a double-row bearing that is original to the car showing no issues as of yet (knock on wood). Also, power top is inop for some reason, passenger side window (short supposedly), ignition tumbler (key won't pop out), rear window (or entire top probably) needs replaced. Other than that, seems pretty clean interior and exterior wise. So, what's a good price considering all of this? and, should this be the double roller IMS? Thanks

A 97 car with the original engine is a dual row IMS bearing.

4K. Do the bearing as there is no warning. Water pump and chain rails too. If it's had annual oil changes or changes not exceeding 5k miles it could be ok. Spend $250 and do a PPI. Might need 3k just for IMS, clutch, water pump etc 4K is high end. Top is 1k. It all adds up. For 8k you can find one ready to go.

Spend a couple bucks to do a CarFax.
May not tell you anything, but it may show some dealer maintenance recently. Mine showed the water pump had been done, even the seller didn't know that. I checked and CarFax was correct. The car has the strongest IMS bearing that was used. |
