2001 Boxter

im considering buying an'01 Boxter from a friend, he's the 2nd owner, 55k miles meticulously maintained, recent work includes new Pirelli's, serpentine belt, battery / alt.
and more than a few oil changes with Mobil 1 in the 5 years he's owned it. basically a completely stock Boxter. 6 speed manual. Silver ext. black interior. had the front bumper cowling replaced after a minor fender bender. Absolutely a beautiful Porsche all around, and drives great. What do think a fair price to pay for it would be. I know i could look at N.A.D.A. But you are all owners, and are aware of maintenance & issues. I was gonna offer $9000. Please advise, Id love to join your group.
Thanks
Mr.Feldman

You don't mention any IMS upgrade or clutch
replacement. The '01 likely has the single row, higher failure rate
bearing. At 55k miles you're close to needing a clutch. Those two will run you close to $3k to replace. factor that into whatever price you pay.

2000 and 2001 cars are a crapshoot as to which style bearing is in the engine. I personally own two 2001 cars since new; the very early build car was a single row, the late car was a dual row, which is exactly backwards from what you would expect. There is no way to know which style is in the engine without taking it apart and looking.

Thanks for the fast response,..I believe my buddy mentioned the bearing needing an upgrade kit & installation sometime in the near future, although there are no issues with it today. But as far as price, any suggestions?

Prices vary as to season, and location.

Make sure the trans is a 6 speed and not 5 as the 6 speed would be on the more expensive S model.

I had a 2001 S I sold but that was a different time and location.

Without physically seeing the car, it is impossible to put numbers on it.

The thing with the bearings is they are good ( seemingly) until they're not. Always best to be proactive and replace it. If it fails, an engine replacement will be twice what the car is worth. Do it, then drive and enjoy the car. There will be more to learn, like cleaning the built up sand and debris between the a/c condensers and the rads, replacing the AOS, coolant reservoir tank, coil oaks, plugs and other more common DIY maintenance items.
If it's an S and you have service records and it looks good, 9 is probably ok. Don't wait on doing the work. You'll put it off and then might regret it. One all done is in the 12-14 range. But for 14, it would have to be VERY NICE.
