Question Owner maintenance possible?

I maintained my '87 3.2 Carrera and intend to get a 986. If I manage to get a car in fairly good shape, what can I expect in terms of regular maintenance tasks and how hard are they to do with this mid-engine car?

Not unlike your 911, but with a few added twists because it is water cooled. Suggest reading up on the 986 DIY sections of a technical focused website like RennTech, which should give you a handle on common maintence issues.

Having aircooled and watercooled cars and not being a professional mechanic I can share that I spent a lot more time in the watercooled stuff. It seems that there is always something that needs attention. Could be just a dash light or window not going up and down. It bothers me when things aren't 100% so I fix it. I find replacing suspension parts a lot. Maybe because of NE salt and moisture? Dunno...

Aircooled being simpler and more stout seems to hold better once they are fixed and mantained and they just stay that way. Keep in mind that I don't drive the old cars in the winter.

I find 996/997/986/987 "soft" in comparison . But they are cheap and still a lot fun

If I can do it, you can do it

I went from a 79SC to Cayman S and you can do all common maintenance, you may just need a few different tools, but brakes, fluids, oil, sir filter, plugs, etc. All very doable

But where you are

may be a challenge for parts, specialized tools, and Porsche water cooled specialist labor.

Yes the common things are doable. It is the uncommon that pose the challenge. I'd ask around to see what water-cooled specialists are available before committing to the car. They are wonderful. Had 2.

Look into a durametric diagnostic for a laptop.

Check out the link below to our site's DIY tech articles on the 986 - it should give you an idea of what you'll be dealing with. Best of luck and let's see some photos of the car once you get it

Wayne has written a pretty thorough book called 101 Projects For Your Porsche Boxster. At $24 it's a pretty cheap way to find out more about Boxster maintenance.

Man, you folks got me through many a tight spot when I owned my 911 - I now feel practically qualified to dismantle a 986 and put it all back together. What an incredible store of information...Thanks!

New Owner of 2015 Cayman S

Hello All,

I am new to this side of the forum. I have a 78SC and 73T 911 and now just bought a 2015 Cayman S. Picking it up on Saturday. I do my own maintenance (rebuilt the engine on the 78) and will want to do as much work as I can on my Cayman.

The 101 Projects for Boxster seems out of date for this car. What good resources are there for working on a 2015 Cayman?

I will post pics once I pick it up.

Brad
