Anybody else interested in coming out this Saturday? The weather is supposed to be nice. So far:
Steve Phil Mark Chris (maybe) Me Send me a pm for directions. |
9:30AM right?
|
Sorry Richard, I'm going to have to cancel. I need to get my car prepped for the track for next weekend, and Saturday is the only day I have to do it.
|
I'll take Christien's spot!
I dropped my engine over the winter, and have all the tools.. including hydraulic jack, jackstands, etc. Let me know what you need. I'm at Bloor west Village, just a stone's throw away. I also have Wayne's books for reference. I'm interested in seeing who will be at Sherway at 10:00 AM on Saturday... anytime after that is good. Let me know - 416-839-4323. james.thompson(at)rogers.com |
James-- e-mail sent! See you tomorrow.....

Well, she's out!!! No obligatory pics today though.
The plan while the engine and tranny are out is to: (a) install carrera tensioners; (b) adjust the valves; (c) degrease the engine and tranny; (d) removal the engine pad remains; (e) repaint the rear parcel shelf with POR-15; (f) install new engine pad. I'm probably going to need help with (a) and (b). This would be my first valve adjust and I would appreciate any assistance. We took the chain covers off today and to my inexperienced eye, the chain and sprockets looked to be in really good condition. Besides the fact that the previous owner/mechanic used sealant instead of a gasket and it took a half hour to get the covers off. More updates tomorrow! |
Congrats.. I assume you were succesful with the oil line.
I can help with the valves.. that's easy. The chain tensioners I've never done, but doesn't sound complex. |
I guess that oil line couldn't stump you after all. Nice going!
|
Hey Richard, congrats! Sorry I couldn't make it. Changed my brake fluid and oil today. I might be able to stop by Friday early evening to help with the valve adj. I've done 3x, so far from a pro, but at least some experience, plus I had the invaluable experience of Rudy Bartling setting a gap then letting me feel what the feeler guage should feel like in terms of resistance.

The valve adjust help would be fantastic. We really could use the help.
Steve and I had a really productive today on the car. A summary of today's accomplishments: (a) separated the engine from the tranny; (b) cleaned the tranny (at a coin car wash :) ) (c) removed the remainder of the engine sound pad; (d) POR-15'ed the engine bay (metal ready and rust paint); (e) bought the foil backed insulation/adhesive for the engine sound pad; (f) returned the stuff for the engine sound pad as the engine bay looked really good painted black and I don't want to deal with another crumbling sound pad; (g) took off the engine tin; (h) painted the engine tin; (i) took off and cleaned the upper valve covers (I've ordered turbo lower covers). All in all, a really good day. We also got to meet James and his 82 coupe with the 3.6 varioram. Nice car! Thanks for stopping by. I have also decided to drop the bucks on a new clutch after splitting the tranny. That thing hasn't been opened in a while and there is a lot of clutch material there. The clutch was working really well beforehand so I hate to mess with a working tranny but I don't want to have to do another engine drop next year. Anyone have the flywheel bolt remover I can borrow? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177295406.jpg |
Update? More pics?
|
Things were going really nicely. The clutch came out somewhat smoothly-- we had to only drill out one pressure plate bolt. All the flywheel bolts came out fairly smoothly.
I had adjusted all of the valves with Chris' help. Thanks again Chris!!! How did your weekend at the track go? We had a small hiccup on Saturday as I had bought used carrrera tensioners and we didn't have a press to insert a pin into the tensioners to hold them in the depressed position. On Sunday I pressed them into place and inserted pins. Unfortunately, on Sunday I had a mental lapse and decided I would wait until the guys came over to insert the tensioners. So what did I do in the meantime? I decided to check my valve setting. Big mistake as I had forgotten that I could not move the engine from TDC. So now I have to reset the cam timing. I have decided that setting the cam timing is too big a job for me and I am going to take the engine to Mantis tomorrow..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177984996.jpg |
Oh man, so sorry to hear the weekend ended like that. At least a cam timing's not too expensive, and your engine will be in good hands at Mantis.
Glad to help with the valve adjust, just wish I could've stayed longer. Mosport was abso-f#$king-lutely wicked. The RA1s made a world of difference, and I really made some strides. I think I learned the definition of balls - it occurs as you're tucking it in for turn 2b, your head is swimming from the forces, and it feels like the car is about to roll over, and you give it MORE gas! You could never believe what these old cars are capable of doing! My dad couldn't keep up with me, and he's driving an 02 996 turbo! |
Chris, I would have thought the 996 turbo would be lapping you with that hp difference! Representing 72s well!
|
I had really wanted to start bolting her back in this weekend. Maybe if I get her back quickly, it is still manageable. We thought we had turned the corner as parts were starting to go back onto the car instead of coming off. At least she will benefit from the all the upgrades and hopefully I won't have to do this again for a long time.
I still can't believe how rust-free the car is even after digging into her to clean her up. |
Well, I do get clobbered on the straights. I've got a trucker's tan from giving pass signals! :D
|
Mantis has a engine test rig. Are you going to get him to run the engine for you?
|
When we put that engine in the back of the van, we both stepped back and started laughing, looked like a monster VW camper.
We should be able to get this thing back in on the weekend, so long as Mantis gets the engine done this week. |
There won't be any work going on at my place this weekend. The engine isn't ready from the shop-- I'm disappointed as this wasn't what I was promised (and paid for) but.....c'est la vie.....
