Carb tuning
I've rebuilt my Zenith carbs over the winter, and now I'm having a hell of a time getting them tuned. I can get a decent idle, but as soon as I put any throttle on I get tons of popping, both out the stacks and out the exhaust.
I'd like to get the car running properly by the weekend, because there's a lapping day at TMP I'd like to do. Has anyone ever been to Autotech? (iautotech.ca) I left them a message yesterday but didn't hear back. Any other shops around here that can do carbs, and get me in this week? Alternatively, if anyone has experience and would like to help, I'm happy to compensate for time with money, beer, dinner, etc. I'll come there, you come here, whatever you like. Thanks! Chris

Chris,
Did you ever get any help? Solve it yourself? I'm in the same boat except that my car needs more work (carb tuning, engine timing, carrera tensioners install, oil leaks, oil leaks, oil leaks). I'm likely going for some professional help this week.

Nope, took it into Auguste in St. Catharines in anticipation of needing it by last Saturday to go to the track (Ernie's the only carb guy at Mantis and he was off racing - sheesh, tough life!). Then we got the snow, so no track. Yippee.
It's running better but Auguste said the right carb isn't responding properly and needs to be professionally rebuilt. Great.

That sucks. So what are you going to do? There is a dusty set of Webers for sale on Craigslist if you figure on changing the whole setup.
On my car, I took off the distributor without setting the engine to TDC so now my engine timing is off. I probably will just have her towed to the shop as I couldn't get the carbs tuned either and setting the engine with bad carbs will be tough for a rook like me....

Hey, didn't we talk about this in another thread, or am I just having deja vu?! I did exactly the same thing back in the fall. It's easy to get the distributor back in the right way and get TDC. If you want, give me a call when you're going to do it and I'll walk you through it. I'd come and help personally, but I'm really pressed for time this month. (it's crazy, unbelievable)
I'll check out the webers on craigslist - toronto/gta? But unless it's a steal, I think the only way I'd replace carbs would be to buy a set of pmo's. May as well go all the way...

Maybe we can get a group discount on PMOs
I had the same problem last spring (got to the Pfaff spring thing late) I ended up getting some help from a friend who is a mechanic. I l got the basics from Pelican help but it is tough getting the engine timing right with the carbs being so out of tune as there is a cascade of sounds....

Yeah, that's definitely true, and that's why I threw in the towel and took it to Auguste. He checked cam timing, engine timing, then started in on the carbs. In fact, he found the #4 and 5 cylinders were firing at the same time! Not cool.
