Anyone know a good, trustworthy transmission- transaxel re-builder in B.C.? Preferably on Vancouver Island. Someone that can set up backlash etc.
Thanks jack |

I took my 915 to a guy in Port Coquitlam to rebuild. When I realized he didn't know that the first gear synchro hub ring and the first gear were two parts and that they came apart I took it all back from him in about 30 parts and took it all in 4 boxes down to John Walker in Seattle and he fixed me up at a very reasonable price. I would not hesitate to deal with him again and it was worth the trip. I wish I would have taken it to him in the first place.

I can do it, but I'm on the wrong side for you.
I've also heard good things about John's work, might be your best bet.

Have a contact number, just incase? I have someone that can do the tranny, but not the set up the ring & pinion. That needs to be replaced on mine.
I'm looking at a used tranny first. Just not sure what I will end up with. Thanks for all help. cheers jack |

Hands down: JW in Seattle.
![]() You want to do it right the first time and not end up removing it again for a while.

Tried him. Wont take my calls. Was going to send me a quote, but haven't seen anything yet. I guess I must have pissed him off.

He's busy.
Try again e-mail and phone. John is very easy-going. ![]() If you ship it, make a solid crate because he hates to have to repair a flimsy one. It's not going to be cheap. The parts cost a lot whoever is doing it. |

I know it's not going to be cheap. Would still like to know what the cost will be. I would like to be able to ask questions if I'm spending that kind of $.

Part of the problem is he's not going to know what it needds until he gets into it - if it needs a new R&P, it's going to add at least $1,000 same with gears with chipped teeth, etc. If you get a quote - expect a low/high range of $3,000 to account for broken / damaged parts inside
![]() Unfortunately, transaxles are one of those things you can't really give a solid quote on until it's open. That said, JW is a solid guy and would be on my short list to rebuild my 911 transaxle. Regards, Andrew M

I'm sure he is busy. I left at least 3 messages & emails over a week ago, and have yet to get a response. I'm not calling him again.

What one is it?
I've only done 901's (and a bunch of bugs) and they are not too bad. If you have two cores I can often make one out of the two. Stack service labour isn't that bad and is often all it needs, but if I have to set the R&P it doubles the labour cost. First gear slider is expensive but I have a couple of good used ones. Bearings, sliders, dog teeth and brake bands are what usually goes and if you have to buy them all new it will get expensive. I have a rebuilt 914-901 in stock. I've never done a 915 but I hear it's just a larger version of the 901 and you can use the dog teeth out of a 944 (or is it 924?). But I've also heard that often the case is trashed. I have no parts at all. Andrew is right, it's imposable to do a quote till you tear it down. If you were asking JW for a nailed down price before you shipped that could be part of the problem. I don't want to do a later trans.

If you are going to crate it anyway then the only issue is shipping.
If you send it Greyhound it will be cheap, so find a good rebuilder and send it there. I'm too busy right now. |
