Canada West Region - PCA

I don't agree with the new rules of the Canada West forums where in order to contribute you have to have your initial and name displayed for all to see in the WWW. Is there an alternative place such as this or 6 speed or rennlist where we should have discussions, at least until the rules are changed? Just asking.

I was a PCA-CWR member for 1 year, only signed up to get info on my car, then I found this place and dropped the membership cause I got all the info I needed for free from other Pelicans. The only thing that being a PCA member helped me with was an engine rebuilding course at Jacobs in N. Vancouver, excellent course by the way, waiting for Rogee & Chris to put on another one cause I'd go again.

Much effort and cost went into launching the new website. There are still some bugs to work out including having to use your initial and last name, we know that this needs to change and we are working to do so.
I started out joining PCA just to get information on my Porsche but soon realized that the support, the events and people are the reason I stayed.

Question

Hm.......yeah, I think that the members should of been asked first before their names were posted.
In these days of identity theft, it's not a smart move.

Can't beat Pelican and Rennlist for technical support or even OT; much more open-minded, IMHO.

I just let my PCA membership expire a month ago, being in Saskatoon I was in the Wild Rose (Calgary) region. I would have to drive 6 hours for any of the club events. Therefore all I was was really paying for was a expensive subscription to Panorama. For technical stuff you can't beat Pelican Parts, and the BMW club has been very hospitable to those of us left out here in the prarie, we are welcome at their track days and events.

The website has been changed to show first name and last initial only. The preceived problem no longer exists.

FYI, I've created an alternative to the CWR forums, and you can find it here: Porsches by Jeffs and a Steve • Index page

Thumbs up

What a relief!

More inclusive, less elitist and restrictive and arbitrary control.
No Wine & Cheese and fewer Q-tips.

Great stuff, Jeff, congrats.

It's about having fun with cars... and some people take themselves too seriously, and are too elitist for my tastes.

Hmmm, why so angry? Did Jeff G say the PCA doesn't have good events? For the record, Jeff G has spent countless hours volunteering for our chapter of the PCA, hosting and designing a website, organizing and running the Canada West Weekend etc...... but you probably already know that.

When did you get your car? Buy it local or import it? Colour, specs etc? How do you like it?

Did you just get it or have you had it for a while.

What events have you been to? Perhaps you are taking part in the DE tomorrow? Will you be at the first autocross of the year?

I am in Langley too, if you need any assistance ever with any DIY project let me know, would be happy to help and loan you any tools or advice you may need.

Enjoy your new car, the 987 cars are excellent!

Cheers

PS I find it odd that one of the executive members posts on here under a screen name yet the club requires a real name......

Cool

History counts and Jeff certainly has a history with PCA trying to bring in some fresh air and blow out some dust, alas, in vain.
Conservatism and elitism resents change because change threatens authority. It looks to me like the new CWR website is trying to create the feeling of entering hallow ground similar to, say, membership at Point Grey. Some Bach choir music in the background would add to the experience of going into the sanctuary, I think.

Undesirables who make an attempt to change things even a little quickly run into a wall of conservatism and censorship. The posting of full names at first without asking the members befrorehand shows how tightly and arbitrary control is held. All the above just my opinion, of course, and I’m an old fool with many faults.

If you fit the mold, you’ll be fine and some of the members are good people but my needs were never met and so, I gave up membership years ago. Pelican and Rennlist are my staples and lots of tours. (Not the single-file slow drives to Squamish, thank you)

Enjoy your Porsche.

Never mind doing so was contrary to the Canadian online privacy act.

Taking a membership list like that and arbitrarily creating accounts, without having it be opt-in, especially with the names (full or otherwise), is problematic.

It's one thing to transfer accounts from one forum software to another, keeping the same account names, etc., as that can be considered software upgrades and keeps the opt-in and terms of service agreements in place. Arbitrarily renaming the accounts to different, never mind real names, even with abbreviated real names, and creating new accounts from a membership list, voids and even bypasses that agreement and violates the privacy act.

But what do I know... I just do this for a living...
