Classic Sports Car Challenge

spreading the word...

I have been sent some info on a proposed race series for sports cars produced prior to 1980. The idea is to get the old Marque Sports cars out of retirement and to have fun.

If a reasonable number of competitors show interest, tracks (Oran
Park and Wakefield) have promised to supply events. Hill climbs may also be on the agenda.

This is not an Historic Racing category. The idea is to keep the eligibility as simple as possible with with 2 door sports cars from recognised manuf's and exclude pure sports racing cars (CAMS group 2A) and Clubman type cars.

Classes based on engine capacity:

up to 1600cc
1601 - 2000
2001 - 3000
3001 and over

If you're interested pls let Mick Roberts know via:

mickroberts at netspeed dot com dot au

Sounds good to me.

Andrew/Mark/Howard - your cars would be good to go as is

Ash - time put a cage in the orange beast

(EDIT - Mick's email address corrected)

Cool. I've emailed Mick.

I guess there would need to be some rules to exclude highly modified cars, or put them in different categories. A prod sports car would flatten my car... having said that Marks car would flatten my car

What we need is someone to set up a Classic category for the club sprints... upps... should we not go there

Mike,

I see the main advantage over prodsports is, being pre 1980 only, you are not competing against cars with modern suspension and ABS brakes etc. Prodsports is power to weight and older cars are simply not competitive on that basis alone.

Its more like a targa tas where you compete against cars from the same period.

Andrew,

I agree that Mark's car is fast (as is Mark I suspect) but, whilst you might not get past him, he is unlikely to lap you in 5 laps and will not have a 50+kmh speed advantage heading to turn 1 at EC.

I would hope its more like Historics racing, but without the need for a 100% original car.

I'd better get a move on! Seats, cage and suspension.

Green cars is almost 'finished' (as good as it'll get at this stage). Time to start on the Tangerine.

Gee, how did I miss this? What A Good Idea! I have been considering Prod Sports simply to keep my C3 license, but from what I've seen they tend to swap too much paint for my liking. I'll definitley email Mick with my interest.

Mark

Ryan,

If that is the case then I will be in but question whether they plan on keeping early cars with 3.6 power out?

Gee, wouldn't that be embarrassing if he did, OK that's going to be my objective - not to get lapped by Mark

Hopefully she’s be a little quicker after all the recent work, last year I was only getting to about 210kmh by the time I reached turn 1, I think Mark said his car was geared for about
180… only gives me a 30kmh advantage for a few seconds at the end of the straight

Mike,

Don't know about the 3.6 hotrods - its all just a plan at this stage. No real idea about rules/regs as yet.

Hey, at least they wouldn't be in my class.

Ryan,

Are they going to be short sprint type races or longer say 1 hour type races.

I think it would be great if we could do a sprint race in the morning and then back up for a 40 min event. Stretch the mind

I look forward to seeing the proposed regs

AMK,

Whilst you might have a few seconds with your potential 30km/hr advantage Mark will have the advantage all over the track in being able to get out of the corners quickers.

AMK,

You shouldn't get lapped in a 40 min race

I probably would
Based on my last (and first) attempt at Eastern Creek Mark was around 10 seconds a lap quicker. Very roughly he should overtake me about the 13th lap or around 24-25 minutes into the race (not allowing for traffic).

Admittedly I was having a bad day and it was my first time at Eastern Creek… but I’m afraid I’m just going to have to insist on 23 minute races

hmmm... "the enforcer"... I like the sound of that

Might have to go with the practice though, don't want to scratch my paintwork... maybe I could just shout nasty things at Mark as he goes past, more like "the harasser" than "the enforcer"
