911 3.2 as a daily driver?? or boxster?
Hey guys,
i ended up selling my 986 and currently driving a clk430, looking at getting into another porsche as my daily drive, im tossing up between a later model boxster than what i had 2.7 MY01+ or a mid 80's 911 carerra 3.2 does anyone have any experience with the 80's air cooled 911's as daily drivers? whats the running costs like? how much difference is there from 2.5 to 2.7? my previous 2.5 had pulley, intake, headers, ECU flash, would that be similar to a stock 2.7? A 993 or 996 would be the best of both worlds, but not in my budget, porsches here in australia are like double what you guys pay in the states any input would be great. You shouldn't be worried about the running cost as much as you should be about creature comforts. In a Carrera 3.2 you are not likely to have aircon (at least not one that is effective), no power steering, no ABS, airbags, etc.
I recently purchased a Carrera 3.2 that I drive daily and love every minute of it despite the aforementioned shortcomings. Last time I checked 986 Boxster S models were in a similar price bracket as mid eighties Carreras? |

I went from new audi's and the like to an 89 911 turbo that still has power seats, mirrors, sunroof, windows etc but the aircon only works when it feels like it but hell I'd take the 911 over the newer stuff everyday..! The build quality of these cars is brilliant and I just love every minute that I'm behind the wheel.. I love the fact that I have to drive the 911, it won't help me out at all, and if I get it wrong there is no ABS etc to assist .. It reauires my 100% attention ! But the rewards are great .. Will I be keeping my 930 longer than my previous cars??
You bet ! |

In Sydney a 3.2 could be a daily. I use my '86 3.2 regularly to work and like above - Love it. I like that it doesn't have ABS, P/S, etc - I get to drive it that way.
My Aircon is not too bad acutally, but in Brisbnae hot days it is a bit much, and if running the car in heavey traffic, hot day and A/C on its probably asking a bit much of an air-cooled system (I dont have the fan on the oil cooler....yet). I also drive a Cayenne and the contrast going from one to the other is something I really enjoy. The Cayenne is a great comfy daily. The 3.2 is when I want to spoil myself driving to work |
