new porsche owner, just introducing myself

hi all! i just bought my first porsche! an '82 911SC cabriolet, well at least that's what i've been told, and that's what it's registered as, though i've read that the cabriolet didn't come out until '83, and i've also read that all SC's have air cond, and mine is a cabriolet without air cond...
anyway, i've been searching and reading these forums for a few days and figured i'd better join up!
i would love to chat with other 911 owners, especially anybody nearby (Gold Coast) as i'm sure i'm gonna have a constant barrage of questions as i do bits and pieces of work on the car myself. i don't have an owners manual, nor a workshop manual yet, so i may be quite naive, im sorry.

so here's a few questions to get me started:
1) When replacing an OUTER cv boot, do i need to take the axle off at the gearbox end first, so the spline thingie will slide out of the wheel hub? or is there another way?
2) Does anyone know where i can get SCHNORR washers in australia? preferably on the gold coast? or someone who can express post. i've searched through some threads and read you can get them at 'coventry', but couldn't find any on the website.
and lastly(for now), 3) has anyone else had problems with electric windows and/or interior fans not working? i checked the fuses and tried switching the window relay with the horn relay and still no luck, any suggestions to avoid an expensive mechanic's bill?
thanks if you've read this far! and many many thanks if you have any answers for me!
grant.

Grant,

Welcome aboard! There are a number of cabriolet owners here so you'll be able to compare experiences.

If you're happy to share your VIN we can also do more research on the origins of your car.

Regards

Rob

Welcome grant. Pictures of your new car are mandatory!

Suggest you also get the Bentley to help answer all your technical questions. Its the Porsche owners Bible.

Cheers
Ed.

Hi Grant,

Good to have another cab owner on-board. I live half way between Brizvegas and the Goldie and would love to talk pcars with you sometime. SmileWavy

I am also new to the Porsche owners club and have really learned a lot from the vast knowledge on this forum. This has helped me immensely since starting my engine rebuild. I have been making regular orders from our host and will be putting in another order soon, if you can not find those washers or other parts required I am happy to add them to my order and we can work something out.

When I dropped the engine and trans, I unbolted the axle assembly from the spline and left that where it was. Be very careful not to have the bearings fallout during the process because you don't want to mix up their positions unless you are replacing the cv's like I am.

As for the electric window and heater fans I have not had any issues with mine so far. But I have just stripped the interior and removed the air con so have some spare wires that will need to be tidied up, so I may have an issue with the blowers soon.

thanks everyone!
i'll take a good picture when i get the wheels back on, its got the slantnose, which i'm still unsure if i like as much or more than the traditional front, may eventually change it back, but the chassis number is WP0ZZZ912CS100299, i'm slightly scared i'll find out some dodgy origins coz i got it for what i think was quite a good price, though i did one of those ppsr checks and it came back with nothing bad.
So the bentley manual is better than the haynes? i have the haynes for my other car and it has served me well!
thanks doctor, i may just take you up on that offer. i have found quite a few australian parts suppliers, but the costs are so much more than pelican's, with shared postage it could turn out alot cheaper!

strikee 06-05-2012 01:51 AM

The Haynes is not worth the paper its written on. Get the Bently. I have both and put the haynes down in disgust the other day. I dont know if its because I went cheap but my haynes is printed on what seems like news paper. You cant really see whats going on in the pictures.

Paste your VIN in here:

Scouser's Porsche VIN Decoder

It will tell you everything you need to know.

Still waiting for some pictures!

Welcome

You can get schnorr washers from any fastener supplier - they're not exotic.

JJ 911SC 06-05-2012 04:54 AM

Welcome to Pelican and Cab Club

It does decode as 1982... and as you said they only started in 1983.

Mine was build in Nov 82 for 1983 production year and the VIN does indicate that as a "D" in the VIN 10th Position.

Its probably a conversion as your VIN decode it as a Coupe. A sign that it would be a conversion would be the absence of the damper (mini shock absorber on the engine carrier which is also different from the other models). Off course having one would not say that it is not a conversion either as some conversion were well done.

Below is a picture of the proper bracket on an updated 3.2 engine, she had a major face lift at some point.

As for the books, the more reference the better: Bentley, 101 Project, Porsche 911 Performance Handbook (1963-1998), Tech & Spec guide, How to Rebuild and Modify your Porsche 911 Engine (even if you are not going to) and yes... Haynes book. All the books have mistake in them (Bentley, Haynes and Wayne's one too), so the more that you have to cross reference the info, the better. Also when I had the engine out, for a specific procedure, the Haynes one had the best photo. It's in the car with me all the time. They are all available here at PP: PelicanParts.com - Porsche Catalog > Pelican Parts Bookstore > Porsche Technical Books & Manuals

Have fun

i'm starting to find that hard to believe, i called every fastner place i could find on the gold coast and nobody's even heard of them!
ended up getting some 'Nord-lock' washers, which seem to do the same thing, but they come as 2 washers stuck together, so it takes about 2mm off the lenth of my bolt, on my cv joint that looked like a little too much to take away, but i still wanted to use them, so i put one on every second bolt, was this a bad idea?
but thanks walko, i found a wurth about 25 minutes away so thats handy!

oh, and no damper on my engine carrier so i guess it's an 82 like we thought, one day i'll get around to removing the whole soft top and seeing how well the cut job was done...

ooh i finally took a photo too, i'll take some better ones when it has all 4 wheels on...

Nord-lock washer are good. Every second bolt, not good.

Get longer bolts. They should be available locally for less then a dollar (AUD/CAD/US) a piece.

SomeGuy 06-07-2012 07:48 AM

Was this the same one as listed on eBay mate?

Specs seem very familiar...

D911SC 06-07-2012 01:40 PM

I would get Schnorrs.

Wurth call them shake proof washers:

Wurth Australia Catalogue May 2012

Boltmasters in Brisbane also list them on their website

grantsmells 06-09-2012 12:48 AM

yea i found it on ebay, in brisbane. probably the same one i imagine.

i ended up getting schnorrs, and then new bolts coz i snapped one of the old ones trying to get it upto correct torque, so hopefully others can learn from my mistake there!

and another question(i could go on for weeks), what's a good way to degrease the aluminum engine? underneath it's a bit oily and i've gotta clean it up for the safety certificate, have given it a bit of a scrub with turps and a toothbrush, but still need something to get into all the niggly bits, preferably a spray on/wash off, but one that's safe on aluminum?

strikee 06-09-2012 04:29 AM

Great car Grant, slant nose has really grown on me over the years. Paint work looks in really good nick.

Super cheap Auto sell a degreaser that works real good, its about $3 bucks a can. I always keep a stock of it for exactly the purposes you describe. Spray on, wash off. Its great.

Good luck!

JJ 911SC 06-09-2012 05:05 AM

Check the product in Post 1 & 2 of: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/cleaning-detailing-polishing/550748-best-cleaner-bar-none.html

Safe on everything, maybe available Down Under

rucool 06-10-2012 02:12 AM

Second the supercheap degreaser. in conjunction with a water blaster.
brings up cast ally great.

grantsmells 06-10-2012 05:06 AM

oh, i've heard regular degreaser is bad for aluminium, is this not true? or is the supercheap stuff just aluminium safe or something?

JJ your engine looks fantastic! i wouldnt know where to start looking for that industrial cleaner, but i found something similar to the first one you used, a citrus based shower cleaner, ill give it a try one day, how'd you get in between all the fins? even my toothbrush doesnt get all the way in there!

JJ 911SC 06-10-2012 09:21 AM

The citrus one work well too. Industrial 9" long Q-tip on wood stick.

Have fun
