In part that may be because not all leathers are the same. (processing methods and finishes)

On horse tack we used Glycerine soap on a sponge then a leather treatment when dry.
This is the best leather treatment I have used on all leather:

Treated with Obenauf's leather oil. (After gentle cleaning with warm water and a drop of baby soap)

Obenauf's is great but it would soon get expensive when treating larger items.

I use Leatherique for my car seats etc.
