What I got for my birthday. A fish

Spent my bday in the jungle. My brother and I wanted to pull some random tropical fish from the river. We asked around and we got a “we know a person”. We met up with a lodge worker. He was wielding a machete hacking back the growth. The mere mention of fishing, he dropped the sword and said “now?”. The mans passion is fishing. He can only fish if a tourist wants to go. He was stoked to get away from yard work to catch fish

Done deal. We worked out a price we show up at the boat with our ultralight rugs. He asked me what strength line we had. I spprox 2.5 kilos and he started laughing. He runs off and gets a few extra rods. They looked like salt water rigs. The dude spoke zero English. We relied on our feeble Spanish and the universal language of fishing.

In summary; we caught these! I pulled up this monster. A Pacu! It was a heavy fish. My biggest freshwater fish for sure.

We used our tiny rods to pull up bait-fish. They looked like tiny catfish we see in aquariums.

Trying to decide which of you is better looking in the photo!

Just kidding Vash, very cool catch, a local pet shop used to have a huge Pacu in a massive tank in front of the store. Related to Piranha if my brain is working right; any of them around to catch?

So, in keeping with true VASH fashion, will we see this fish featured in that other "What's for Dinner" thread ?

Great trip! Up at 12000 feet elevation; my heart rate ave was 100! It’s 58 here on my couch. I regret not hiking the Inca trail, but I would have never made the downhill sections with my cracked knee cap. ( I did heal significantly on the steep roads on Cuzco Peru - I gained full mobility limping up and down those steep streets). The porters are super humans. The group got gourmet meals up there! My brother said a porter carried a 40lb propane tanks, with pallets of eggs on top! I missed seeing all of that.

We took a cooking class, and I mastered the Pisco Sour!

I want to go back to see the Amazon river. That pacu was from a tributary of the mighty river.

Food was awesome. I managed to stay food poison free.

Macchu Picchu was mind boggling. As were the other Inca sites. I also learned about ancient grains. I’ll never look at Quinoa the same again. They do a lot with the super food. Some old lady told me how to make a porridge with it. I made it for breakfast this morning.

I was going to release that fish when the guide told me in Spanish not to. That thing fed a village. All the lodge workers ate it. They grilled up half of the smallest pacu for us to try. It is a firm, flaky white fish.

My brother and I watched them grill them up. Universally; I think a open fire is a male gathering. Surrounding the fire was a group of young men. All nodding and poking the fire with sticks. Exactly what we do here. Nobody understood a word I said. They grilled the fish with no salt or pepper. Plain.

That thing looks like a watermelon with fins.

Pretty cool that you were able to feed the village with it.
