asphalt millings for driveway
Hello everyone ......... so my wife and I purchased our retirement home last year and like many homes in the country/mountains it has a gravel driveway . Nothing wrong with that but not ideal for the Porsche
and there is enough grade to it that it was very easy to spin the tires coming up the drive . It is a long driveway that goes in front and the back of the house making concrete or conventional blacktop too expensive . So I started doing some research on asphalt millings . Ground up road pavement that is fairly fine in size . Talked to a local guy that did grading for my man cave and he said it's pretty good stuff . So today was the day , three loads of millings did almost all of my driveway just a portion in the back that isn't done . They layed down the millings from the dump truck , then semi leveled with a Bobcat . Once it was " close " they sprayed it with diesel fuel to help soften the millings . Then a 6 ton dual vibrating drum roller to mash it down I was quite surprised how well it packed down . No it is not a true blacktop driveway but it is so much better than gravel and the price was very competitive . They did a great job leading up to the man cave the Porsche will go in with no problems . I thought you guys might want to know about this option if you are thinking about driveway renewal . Here are pics from today .![]() ![]()

Gonna be some tire tracks laid down hard in the Georgia heat next summer!

How many tons and what was the cost if you don't mind me asking? I have an area going from my driveway (concrete) to my workshop which is gravel.

Just a word of caution, but it is advisable to check with state and local authorities on the legality of their use. They've been known to leech carcinogenic chemicals if they're not properly sealed, and some areas (such as NJ) have severe restrictions on their use. The guy who lives up the lane from us laid some down without regard to the restrictions, and he had to take it all back up again. But they are cheap.

They put this stuff down where I park my boats and RV, it's been fantastic.

How does it hold up to heavy rain?

I've had that down on a little road on the low portion of my property for ten years now. Don't remember the length, but it was fifty yards. We didn't spray any petroleum products on it because we were told it was illegal to do so. It's done a good job for the past decade for something laid down by the dump truck and spread, leveled and compacted by me with my tractor. It cost me $1K at the time.

Does Georgia ever get a hard freeze? I wonder about water getting into the matrix, freezing and causing heaves that may result in pot holes.

Millings are great. They used to be free, no longer due to aforementioned regs. More stable than 2b by far.

I put down asphalt millings for my barn drive almost 10 years ago. It has held up very well. I paid 75 bucks per 22 ton dump load and had 6 loads delivered. I used my tractor to spread and level it.

I would have used chipped granite. Almost all the roadways at Talladega Raceway are done with this and they support 18 wheelers after hours of rain. Get off this stuff and you'll be up to your axles in red mud. Can be regraded and re-rolled anytime and you can add as needed. No binder needed. Pleasant colors too.

Hopefully I can answer all questions in one reply
. What's in the pics took three loads of a dual axle dump truck each load being 18 tons so total of 54 tons ! The price per load was 425.00 with the labor to put it down , level it and roll it of 1500.00 for a total installed price of 2775.00 . That gave me 700 ' of driveway averaging about 10.5 ' wide , one more load would have done the entire driveway . But the portion behind the house that isn't done is totally flat so not a problem . I have been in Georgia for coming up on 9 years and never had a heavy freeze , in general the coldest it gets here is the low 30's . So I don't expect any heaving/shifting due to freezing . I have no clue how well this holds up to rain or anything else as I've only had it down for one day But based on what some locals have told me , and the replies on this thread I think it will hold up well . I think that raps this up ....... go DAWGS !

I happen to be on vacation (running my log splitter) a few years back when the county workers were grinding the pavement in front of my farm for eventual repaying. I went out and asked them about the multiple dump truck loads that they were hauling away. One of the guys asked me how many loads I wanted. I ended up getting 3 20 ton loads dumped in my barn driveway....My neighbor got about 15 loads on his long lane.
They said if I could spread it out before they left the next day after paving the road, that they could use thier 30 ton highway roller to do my driveways also. I used my JD 955 with the FEL to spread 60 tons of millings (about 200 loader fulls), and the next day, they rolled it all out, and it still looks good 5 years later. I have heard that you can spread driveway sealer to hold it together better, but it would probably soak up multiple gallons. |
