harder than i thought. i took it further. i'm brushing after every event that involves me eating or drinking something (other than water).

up till now, me and my dentist high-five on my way out of the office. we found a chink in the armor, and i am getting onboard to head it off at the pass.

i'm one week in, and burning thru the toothpaste. (and floss)

i cant imagine what the world was like "back in the day" before good oral hygiene. i bet teeth fell out late 20's early 30's?

I brush twice a day. Throughout the day I use those plastic tooth picks with the point on one end and the feathery thing on the other. I use one after eating anything during the day and am at the point where I can hardly stand anything in my teeth. I also use that mouth wash that moistens your mouth instead of those harsh, perfumed ones. Being older, I found my mouth dries out and the mouth wash I use now has helped big time in terms of keeping my mouth moist and breath a lot fresher.

Same here, I'm addicted to them.

Also get a good water pick and a mouthwash you can tolerate. Anything is better than nothing.

Actually, brushing after eating wears tooth enamel down more quickly especially after eating acidic foods. You're better off using mouthwash after eating and drinking.

I actually wore down my gums on my lower inscisors which exposed softer tooth enamel. I had to have the two areas bonded to create a protective layer. Too much of a good thing I guess.

Biotene? I used that for a while, mostly because I don't like the harsh mouthwashes that are mostly alcohol. I've since switched to a mainstream that is alcohol free.

Mouthwashes (or gum or anything really) that have Xylitol as a sweetener actually fight cavities because they kill the bacteria. Xylitol is a sweetener that comes from either the Nordic furniture industry (birch trees) or some of it is coming from corn. It's a "natural" sweetener like maple syrup, but it has far fewer calories than regular sugar, so the bacteria eats it like it's sugar, but then basically starves to death. At least, that's what all of the documentation says.

I tried those plastic toothpicks with the soft rubbery, feathery stuff on them and didn't like them. I've gone to these things.

I like them better. At work, I usually eat an apple or two per day after I've eaten other things. The apple gets small stuff out of my teeth and then I use the floss-pick to get the apple bits out. It may not be as good as brushing, but it's better than nothing.

Everyone knows that you're supposed to use a soft bristle brush, right?

Get a Waterpik flosser and toothbrush system. You will be amazed at what you miss with flossing. And it's fun. Use hot water.

My dentist said that’s what our wisdom teeth are for. They grow forward to push the gap closed as teeth fall out. He said kids are being born now without them. Nutty.

Men did tend to die in their mid-40s on average only a hundred years ago.

The lifespan of teeth was probably negligible.
Some people got/get including George Washington by fine without them.

Diet was different back then and didn't include sugar with every meal (except for rum and sailors arrrrh).

My wife is a retired dentist and uses one of those electric toothbrushes. she swears by the two minute rule and her electric has a two minute timer built in. I hate the thing. It rattles my entire skull so I stayed with the old tried and true until just recently.

TRUE!! i once tried to debate my dentist with how crappy our teeth were designed by nature. he put me in my place politely. it's a cool system. we have multiple teeth, just in case one breaks the rest can keep soldiering on (imagine if we had one big tooth? flossing would be easier, but if it broke, we are screwed), the wisdom teeth "push". something else, i forget. it isnt horrible.
