Talking Things that are GREAT about getting older.

The "Things that suck..." thread was pitiful. I was getting depressed reading it. Yes I have some of the those challenges but heck, I kept hearing the old Hee Haw song "Gloom despair and agony on me..."

First world problems!

How about being thankful for what you have rather than upset about something you lost? I'll start:

1) With age comes the wisdom of experience. There are tons of things that are easier because I learned that there is an easy and a hard way.

C'mon and help me out. What are you thankful for that you have now?

Retirement!

I had a nightmare last night that I was still working, it was awful!

I am thankful I made it past 73! Back in Vietnam I never thought I'd live this long! it is nice to have people hold the door for you, load the stuff from Costco/Walmart for you, discounts from EVERYWHERE, getting a lot of respect from my evening class students, especially those from Japan/China/Korea since they respect their elders. Tell those same students what it was like growing up in the 50's and 60's especially the first TV show I watched! Remembering being able to walk down the road carrying my squirrel rifle to the nearest woods to bag several of those little guys and no one panic. They're probably a lot more but I can't remember what they are????

At 52 I am suddenly not needing to be a ridiculous tight-wad. My habit of hard work and saving has come to fruition.

That is the most preposterous thing I have ever heard.

Just what do you think about that?

Having resources and fortitude to address your own problems. e.g. Have sanded off the scaly layer of skin from the foot with this issue and intend to do a little surgery/procedure on myself later today too. Of course, needing to do this stuff leads to the other thread about aging

Not having to prove anything. Not much peer pressure...I outlived many of those guys.

Hugh, I have those too! It's always a work crisis in the dream. I wonder how long it will last.

As others have said...Reaching the point where you're no longer competing with people or trying to make an impression. Its wonderful. Also, kids being out on their own. All those worries and expenses behind you.

Great new thread OP. I wouldn't trade 60 for 40. I'm loving retirement.

What a blessing. Both my children are adults in every sense of the word...so much more clever and grounded at their age than I ever was. They our our best accomplishment.

That and financial freedom...which drives freedom of thought and intent. I don't have FU money but I have integrity money.

I would but only if I knew then what I know now (—Bob Seger, et all). But we all know that ain't happenin'.

Getting older sure has its benefits but that can't last either.

Let’s see, at 72 survived Nam, worked nearly 50 years different companies, varied experiences, retired four years ago. Married to the same beautiful woman for 40 years. No kids, many dogs, had two Porsche’s, both gone looking for another. Generally healthy, stay active both physically and mentally. Don’t G.A.S. what anybody thinks, come and go as I please. Life is good.....
