It was touching to see the growing number of flowers and red caps throughout the last couple of weeks. I saw a family with two little kids laying flowers at lunch time; they drove to the factory just to do that. I saw one of the security guys speaking to the dad as they were about to drive away, so I hope they at least got a tour of the reception area.

Sadly I never got to meet him in person, but by all accounts he was loved by all. To always tell it like it is, and to walk the walk - one couldn't ask for much more in life, I think.

I see where Ham crashed on Friday, he hasn't been higher than 3rd yet, he'll have to dig deep today (bout half hour from now) if he intends to sit on pole. Leclerc strong
this race looks like he might have pole in the bag.

So I'm going for the underdog, Ham, to fight his way to front row. Should be fun to watch.

On another note, there was an event at Sears Pt this w/e where they brought a F1 car. I've seen older F1s in person but never one of the current KERS/MGUK breed. It was a Hamilton spec Mercedes, not entirely sure what year - drive by Esteban Guttierrez from what I could see.. Either him or his clone, he looked familiar.

I was not impressed by the sound - barely better than Indycar - but I was shocked at the cornering speed. For reference in my vantage spot I'd seen 50-60s GT cars slowly pass by, then more modern cars like Audi R8 Le mans prototypes on rails... Impressive. Then the F1 came and *obliterated* that feeling of speed. All the while looking super controlled...

I think these cars are their worst enemies. They look planted, they don't make enough noise, it looks easy. It's almost like watching the VW electric prototype conquer Pikes peak. It looks kinda fast but without the cue from the sound it's hard to tell how fast.

Without the perspective of having just seen really fast Le mans prototypes before in the same spot and seeing how the F1 absolutely monstered them, I might have missed out on that car's amazing qualities... I used to think they should bring back screaming engines just for fun - but they really should do it for the spectacle... These things are amazing !

I was there - great event. That's Nico's 2016 car, W07/04. Worst-sounding of the current era. It sounds like a beating yak. They've improved, but nothing like the old cars (the historic F1's they ran sounded great). When I talked to a mechanic he mentioned that the new cars are much bigger.

But - they are amazing machines. Esteban set a new record - 1:15 on a longer track than the previous 1:20 Indy car record. The 2016 car is materially slower than the 2019 cars, so there's another few seconds if they wanted to improve.

I was 3' away from the car in the garage (anyone could walk in), and right above it in the pits. It's so cool that Merc flew the car in for the event. It was next to Alberto Keller's 1939 W154 which sounded amazing - and the smells reminded me of old 0.49 cox engines.

I took a bunch of photos and videos. At T2 I took a video of Race Group 2 (1955-59) and the W07 - the difference is staggering.

Good show Ricciardo!

Why does Haas keep Grosjean?

chapo 06-08-2019 12:40 PM

Been asking that question for years now.

I don't understand keeping Verstappen in the pits until everybody else went out. Hamilton and Bottas did flying laps 3 minutes before end of qualifying, why risk it just to get into Q3?

bkreigsr 06-09-2019 07:38 AM

Hambone and Bottas both sandbagged quali.
Another 1-2 finish for Merc in store?
Ferrari finds a new way to shoot themselves in the foot?

Maybe they just let the stewards do it...

oldE 06-09-2019 11:43 AM

It was nice of Ferrari to show up this weekend!
Still, seven in a row!

Best

Nope, the stewards screwed Vettle.

I used to envy the folks that watched F1 on Sky. No longer. WTF do two or three announcers talk at the same time? It makes it impossible to hear anything they say. And it happens all the time.

javadog 06-09-2019 12:04 PM

Did the Hambone win? He always seems to go pretty well in Canada...

I forget who’s turn it is.

rfuerst911sc 06-09-2019 12:05 PM

What a hollow victory ! Too many rules that prevents actual racing .

yellowperil 06-09-2019 12:08 PM

Whom ever came up with that penalty, should be dunked into the St. Lawrence
and let the 'gators have at 'em. I hope this gets reversed. Vettel and ferrari shoud
be allowed a hearing on this. But Vettel really did win this race.

Scott Douglas 06-09-2019 12:11 PM

I was surprised he kept it out of the wall. No way a penalty should be imposed on him.
If Ham were a true racer he would have gone to the inside seeing as Vet was headed to the wall. Instead he tried to stick to the line and it disappeared on him.

Deschodt 06-09-2019 12:46 PM

Wow - the stewards really screwed that one up. With al the replays available and a countersteering Vettel they still dinged him? I’m no Vettel fan but I was happy to see him almost not show up on the podium. Very human... I could sympathize... I’m almost sorry he relented. Let the FIA penalize you -
The season is over anyway...

Watch them penalize him now for swapping position boards or showing up late or some other BS. Today was F1 snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Small people making history the only way they can.......getting it wrong!!!!!

At some point, officials should contemplate "for the good of the sport".

I did love the position board switching, even better that they still were not changed before the podium celebration.

I thought the Vettel penalty was bs.

What I did love about the podium was the joy from the Mercedes person who accepted the constructors trophy. You could tell she appreciated the moment.

cairns 06-09-2019 01:28 PM

They should have given Hambone the position and then let them race to the end. Result would have been the same but it sure would have tasted different. They took away any impetus for Hamilton to pass.

TOTALLY AGREE!!! I also liked the fact Hamilton pulled Seb up on the top podium.
