Big meteor this morning

It was in the southern sky (North of Philadelphia) travelling southwest at about 6:35 am. It was visible for a few seconds, very large, very bright, travelling fast and with a pronounced tail. It was definitely high, it went behind a large cloud and came out the other side.

I have seen plenty of meteors, this was like none other I have seen. the sky was starting to get light but this was large and very bright - I first thought it was an airplane on fire, then I realized how high it was.

Pretty cool to see and unexpected.

I've seen a few like that in my life. It's always pretty special when you see one.

I saw it while I was driving into Charlottesville, Va.

HUGE!!!

It seemed lower on the horizon, and my first thought was burning airplane too...

I was waiting for it to hit to the south, a big flash of light, and for dinosaurs to start running across the road fleeing the explosion.

It reminded me of those Russian dash cam videos where something like that is flying across the sky and the Russian drivers don't even notice.

It looked like something straight out of a medieval tapestry, where death rained down from the sky.

I felt like I was the only one that saw it. Glad you mentioned it. It was beautiful silhouetted against the early/pre dawn sunrise.

Did you see a meteor this morning? Several viewers say yes

Many of you have reached out to NBC12 Meteorologist Andrew Freiden about the event. The shooting star looks like it happened around 6:35am Wednesday, Jan. 9

Here’s the only video we’ve found so far-- this was obviously SLOW-MOVING.

What you describe looks different than what is in the video.

Good idea to report it as previously mentioned.

Matches the video.

The video makes it look like it crashed into the earth.

Was the 3-4 seconds of bright light actually the result of it burning up into nothing?

Yes, that was the meteor. I would recognize it anywhere.

I have seen other shooting stars- but what impressed me was the trail of flames. In the nest video (not the greatest quality video), you could see the flaming trail to some extent. Where I saw it, it looked bigger and the flames were much more pronounced. The exposure of the meteor against the bright background in the video mutes out the trail somewhat.

I from the size and trajectory, I wasn't kidding about a big kaboom and dinosaurs running. It did not flame out into nothing. It seemed to have enough mass to get through the atmosphere. I was a little concerned anywhere from southside Virginia to Georgia was about to get whupped.

I didn't hear any noise. The road I was on is hilly and twisty, I lost it in trees / hills at about 15° elevation.
One of my co-workers who commutes on the same road saw it as well - he had the same initial reaction that it looked like a plane on fire.
I was really impressive how bright it was against a sky that was getting light.
That nest video on the NBC12 website doesn't do it justice.

I wonder if hit hit the ground, or just skipped off the atmosphere. Cool event.

168 reports. It looks like they have it triangulated over the ocean.

this^

It immediately reminded me of this internet picture. Approximate trajectory, flames, etc.. It really looked like a plane at first glance from my position.

the colors (to me) were close to the burning airplane, I'm not posting it to be funny- it really looked from my angle close to this- but with more orange burning flame trailing behind. You could almost see the flames lapping. The sky had about the same amount of blue in it, so it really stood out. If you squint your eyes at the airplane pic to the point where the airplane becomes almost a dark invisible blob, that was close to it from my angle.

I just saw bright white. For me it was so much brighter than ambient (I was driving up out of a small hollow) that any color was likely washed out.

You do realize how many miles are between locations of the people you quoted?

It was in the southern sky (North of Philadelphia) travelling southwest at about 6:35 am.

I saw it while I was driving into Charlottesville, Va.

Nice sighting.

I saw one while traveling in Kansas. It broke into three pieces. It left a trail of smoke. Never forget it.
