I wonder if they have a problem writing dog instead of pig on their checks in the beginning of the year.

Question: My son has been learning Mandarin for the last 8 or so years. The last couple he has had the same tutor come to the house to help and because of that he will be spending the summer in Kunming. Is there traditionally a gift given to someone like a teacher for new year?

^^^^ that's pretty cool. I'm assuming he does this with a southern draaawl. I had a professor from Madrid who's big thang was enunciation...."Hola" around the the classroom took forever :)

PorscheGAL 02-05-2019 03:58 PM

Actually, we started him so young he doesn't have much of an accent. Chinese immigrants commonly tell him he speaks like a native speaker. Me, on the other hand, it's like Ellie Mae Clampet trying to pronounce some of the words.

I was married to a Chinese woman, who came from a poor family from Tianjin.. when trying to figure out what gift to get her for significant occasions.... she always mentioned money,,

I'd give a Red Envelope with $100, and then a gift that represents our culture...clothing etc.. 8 years, you have to have keyed in on her style..

Actually I think the dish served at new years is dried duck! The duck is literally hung out to dry

Shaun @ Tru6 02-05-2019 04:35 PM

A friend of mine here made drunken duck tongues, among other things, for her family's party.

MIL gave Mrs. Lee and me red packets with $200 in each this morning. This was last night's dinner.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549432859.JPG

Year of the Boar in Japan. Not a pig. It’s definitely brown and hairy. The Lunar new year doesn’t get recognized here anymore.

Having sausage, and grilled potatoes tonight, try to work some bacon in also....I don't need a reason !

vash 02-06-2019 06:54 AM

LeeH. Looks great. I love hot pot.

I quit getting red envelopes when I git married.

vash 02-06-2019 06:56 AM

Not sure”eating” pork on year of the boar is in the spirit of my homelands new year.

Love to see you all step up on year of the monkey. :D

That's why, when asked, I'll say I eat "most things" not "everything!" ;)

That looks amazing! What is the plate 2nd from the left front second picture?
