Brake Pad Life

What sort of mileage are you guys getting our of your brake pads on your daily driver?

Reason I ask is while having my old Toyota truck serviced this week I was informed the front pads have 30% of wear left and rear shoes are fine after 85k miles

I don't tend to drive it like Miss Daisy but as it's not lightweight or has a powerful engine I tend to conserve my momentum

Seems I don't use my brakes too much, so my challenge now is to see if I can eek out their life to 100k

I get a lot of life out of pads, 100K wouldn't be unreasonable, now aftermarket rotors, not so much. Toyota. Stay OEM.

Camry DD. Original pads and rotors in front lasted 110K miles. Drums are original at 150K miles. Fronts OEM replacement pads are fine in 40K miles but the aftermarket discs (China) were replaced at 20K. They were 1/5th the price of dealer discs so they average out the same price in the long run but you have to change them 5 times which I didn't want to do again so bit the bullet and went OEM.

2001 Chevy K2500HD I sold a couple years ago-

At about 165,000, the fronts were pretty worn, so I bought pads for all four.
After completing front brakes, I popped the rear wheel off, and..... Plenty of brake pad left!

When I sold the truck, I handed the buyer the rear pads, still in the box. 200,000+ miles.

I do my own brakes. A few times while getting tires I was told similar to OP, the fronts were done.

Depending on which car, I either get off the shelf pads or order performance pads.

I get the car in the air pull the rims and look at the brakes, they have 50% pads left. Pissed off, I out the pads on a shelf in garage and put the car back down.

I have an 04 Taco, I was told the pads were done, I drove it another 30k miles before I changed them. I kid of forgot about them and heard metal scraping one day so I decided it was time.

I got my money's worth out of those pads.

About 3 weeks ago I replaced the rear disc pads on my wifes 2007 Toyota RAV4 that had 132,000 miles on the original rear pads ! They were down there but not to the backing pad yet . Replaced the front pads at 70,000 will have to check them soon . All brake rotors look solid with no ridges they are nice and smooth . Pretty amazing .

I'm getting antsy about the pads on my wife's '12, Altima Coupe with 113K miles on it with original pads & rotors. Last time I took it in to have some work done I didn't want to do myself, they told me the rear pads were getting down. I thought BS since front pads usually go first, so I'll inspect them maybe this weekend when I do an oil & filter change. I'm thinking of buying pads from the dealer when I have them done eventually. I remember when brakes (drum) needed to be done at 20K or 30K miles.

Original front pads on my 08 Boxster went about 20k. I got the car at 15k and the previous owner was an old lady that was hell on wheels.

Several months ago I brought my wifes car in for a new computer, 53,000 miles. Service dept informed me the pads were gone and it was metal on metal. Go home lift the car, pull the wheels off, brakes are fine. Dealers always think every cust will fall for a $600.00 repair. $600. was their est.

My old land cruiser? 15-18,000 miles and the front is way done. My wife's Sienna, 35-40,000. My old Dodge diesel, bout' 80,000 mile. I don't haul any load but the occasion few plywoods in the back. My 4runner get about 30,000 out front. I have about a mile of down hill, and go down it several time daily. Some parts are steep about 14-15% grade. OEM pads usually

Some Yotas get some good miles out of their brakes. My 93 Celica Alltrac has 89K and I'm fairly certain pads are original. Of course Toyota uses pads that aren't made from compressed grass clippings. The material has a tight matrix, not coarse at all.

Tells me you are not a tailgater. We've all seen them every time we drive...brake lights flashing frequently. They are the ones asking why their pads need replacing at 25,000 miles.

I'm on 175,000 on my original pads with plenty of life left...except I get to cheat a bit because they are on my Camry hybrid and the brakes don't engage unless you press very hard under 45 mph or medium hard over 45, so basically never.

P-car dealer thinks his oil change is a bargain at $450. They do top up the washer fluid. I can't imagine what they think a two axle brake job is worth. New rotors are imperative because turning rotors might cause death & dismemberment. Front brakes on the '15 P-Car lasted 30,000 miles. Fronts on the 2010 Lincoln sedan are a bit over 1/2 used at 78,000 miles.

I usually replace the front pads on my 86 El Camino after 50,000 miles. The last set cost me $14.00 for GM Goodwernch pads. So a $14 brake job every 50K is pretty cheap still. The rear brake shoes go about 200K or more and I have only changed them once and I have 365,000 miles on the Elky.

My 2005.5 Jetta - Rears pads wore out at 80K miles. Front Pads lasted 200K miles. I
My wife's 2005 Sienna minivan ATE rotors. Lucky to get 2 years out of Rotors, and since it was dealer maintained, new rotors and pads at the same time.
