Make body cameras mandatory if they are not presently required, and have all encounters recorded.

Loosen the requirments for ccw permits and let people defend themselves.

The homeless problem is way above your pay grade. I don't think you can do anything as chief outside of arresting the most extreme homeless offender. If the guy is a nuisance let him be but if he is a danger to anyone he needs to be addressed.

As a Police Chief, he would not have a say wrt issuing ccws. If he was running for Sheriff of any county in CA, OTOH, he would have absolute discretion to issue them to any *not disqualified* person. But Sheriffs are elected, not hired.

A little known fact in the rest of the country is that in CA., ccw is 100% legal but completely at the discretion of the local Sheriff of your county. Some rural counties give them out like candy but the big counties w big cities do not.

Police in big cities spend plenty of time already dealing w crazy homeless people.

Here's wishing you luck, David. It would be quite a good thing is you beat out all those other candidates.

I thought police chiefs and county sheriffs can issue CCWs.

Speaking about this subject; former Sheriff Stan Sniff of Riverside lost his job the last election. One of the reasons he was beat was his double talk on the CCW issue. The new sheriff Chad Bianco is starting to unblock the CCW log jam. At least that's what I heard a couple weeks ago on the Gun Talk radio show.

I wish you the best of luck, courage and wisdom.

I'll throw a couple peeves of mine out there for consideration - - I don't know who decides these things:

1) Police car paint schemes should be easily identifiable: No murdered out black with with black letters or ghosted white with white letters, etc. In this day and age, there should be no doubt about who's an actual officer. Being and/or imitating the cops should be a very conspicuous activity.

2) I think uniforms should be functional but friendly, i.e., I'm not a fan of the tacticool look unless there's actually a SWAT situation. Officers should be viewed as trusted leaders in the community, not as occupying forces.

3) Police should not benefit from enforcing the law, i.e., I am hugely against asset seizure programs wherby the police get the perps car/boat/weapons/etc. The conflicts created by such programs are enormous, and even if/when such policies are appropriately applied, they inherently undermine the trust the general populace has in the police.

Again, best wishes and good luck!

Thank you everyone for your support. I was well-prepared for my interview and did my absolute best. There were 12 candidates, including the person that was placed as the "interim." The decision was made to make the "interim" candidate the full-time leader.

There are things beyond my control and I can look myself in the mirror and know that I did my best.

Again, thanks everyone!
