Reading a book.

Just an observation.

I’m reading a book. What book isn’t important. I’m traveling a lot, and a book is a great companion for those “table for one” situations.

I’m not sure what’s happening. People keep asking me what I’m reading. Mostly females. It just happened again. The cutest supervisor in our group pulled me aside and asked me to tell her about my book.

People not reading paper books anymore? I’ll always read printed books. I love them. I love coming across a word I’m not familiar with. I’ll iphone it immediately. Makes me feel smarter :)

What are you reading now?

Silly comment on the cover, not sure what kind of Heinkel could chase a spitfire during the Bob. But good book so far...

I love reading too, and stuck to paper books until my wife gave me a Kindle for my birthday in Sept. I miss the paper books a lot, but love the word look-up feature. If you find a word you don't know you just hold your finger on it. The definition, origin, and synonyms pop up miraculously. I can also adjust font size if I forget my reading glasses. I'm adjusting, but do miss all my books piling up in the book shelf.

I just finished "Adrift". Great true story about survival at sea after a shipwreck. Right now I'm reading "La Bête Humaine" by Emile Zola. I try to rotate between modern and classics.

Reading is one of the best things about being retired.

GH85Carrera 02-26-2019 07:04 AM

But, but but, that is so ANALOG!

You are supposed to get an iPad some e-book reader and be digital. Hang out at Charbucks or the trendy coffee shop or deli.

Actually my wife loves her iPad for reading. She can read a book for free from our metro library system, and her iPad weighs the same if she has a 1000 page novel or no book at all.

Sooner or later 02-26-2019 07:05 AM

My older sister uses a Kindle. I still like the paper version.

Dude. You're an engineer so I will excuse you.

Those are mostly come-ons.

You're welcome.

Evans, Marv 02-26-2019 07:15 AM

Yep. If you were a good looking lady, mostly men would be asking you what you're reading.

Craig T 02-26-2019 07:17 AM

I went kicking and screaming away from paper, but it's growing on me now. It's some basic model, small enough to fit in my back pocket. The best feature...Can read at night with no light.

I travel frequently as well, and always have a book or 2 for the plane. (4) I recently finished

"Never look at the empty seats" Charlie Daniels
"In their own words Civil War Generals" collection of essays and journal entries from Grant, Lee, Longstreet, Meade, Sheridan, Farragaut, Sherman, etc. during major campaigns
"Crazy From the Heat"--the old David Lee Roth autobiography
"The Big Rich"--about the big Texas oil families from (mostly) back in the day

Rusty Heap 02-26-2019 08:25 AM

grew up reading books in the bathtub.

paper dries out.

Its Crispness, lick your thumb to flip......batteries never die.......There is a tactile feel to paper. Cold and Sterile digital print lacks that very essence.

and.........

you can start a fire with it too...............and not from your Li-po batteries burning down a plane in-flight in your luggage.

Seahawk 02-26-2019 08:41 AM

Kristin Hannah?

Are you planning on hiring two Nigerians to get out of making your presentation?

:D

A KH novel is catnip if you are not.

vash 02-26-2019 08:50 AM

I went in to buy the Great Alone. They were out. I grabbed this as a last resort.

Good book. It’s about the French women during WW2.

Nigerians? :). You lost me. This is my first KH book.

I'm bipolar... have a stack of paper books and just bought my second kindle (fire).

I read very old boring books... wait, I did just buy a box of Charles Bukowski books off ebay.

Bill Douglas 02-26-2019 09:24 AM

Now that I read all the James W Hall books I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on the Florida Keys although I've never actually been there LOL

I've started to read my way through Maeve Binchy's collection. The Maeve Binchy books are good because she "re-uses" characters and settings from one story to the next so you already know the character.

Chocaholic 02-26-2019 09:25 AM

For some reason, lovely women on airplanes are not asking me about this book. But Junger tells an incredible story. WW1 was beyond brutal...and primitive.

Really stupid and clumsy reach on my part to Jussie Smollet...I'd erase but it is too late!

Since I began purging all our books a month or so ago, I have reread:

- Dead Solid Perfect: Dan Jenkins
- See You Later, Alligator: WFB
- Genesis Angels: Aram Saroyan

I gave up books a few years ago & bought a Kindle. I do most of my reading in bed & the kindle is light & easy to hold. I can change the font size & back lighting. I like the dictionary function & the space I gained selling about half of my old books.

I'm currently almost half way through the excellent fantasy trilogy Gentlemen Bastards by Scott Lynch

fxeditor 02-26-2019 10:19 AM

I have to admit that I am a long time Kindle convert. I seem to read much faster with it over the paper counterpart.

One of the best features of the Kindle IMHO is the ability to automatically sync your stopping place and be able to pick up reading on any kind of device! I can read on my phone, tablet, or work PC and always be on my current page. Very convenient!

I'd rather pull weeds than read a book. I do read all the newspapers that come my way and any car mag available. There have been few books that could hold my attention page to page, Tom Wolfe being one. Since I end up flipping pages and speed reading (I'm not trained to do that) I find books are not comfortable.

Read that last year. I agree-it was very gripping.

Heinkel built a 112, single engine fighter which lost out to the Bf109. Only about 50 or so were built, most went to the east.

As for books, I've always got a couple on the go. In the past month, I've read about four of Ann Cleeves' murder mysteries, I have almost everything Ian Rankin has written and have read most more than once. Just dug out my copy of Ken Follett's Key to Rebecca. If I am going to be waiting or sitting for a period of time, there will be a book in my hand.

Best

I was on a flight home the other day and I think I was the only one with an book. I think everyone else had a phone. Weird to me.

I just got a Chicago Public library card at the age of 68. The last time I was in a public library was when both my boys were younger at least 10 -12 years ago. I like reading books, something I did not like as a kid. I like the feel of the paper and turning of the pages. When I'm not using the library, I buy used books and later donate them. I like mostly history and mysteries.

This is what I'm reading now: Rising from the Rails: Pullman Porters and the Making of the Black Middle Class by Larry Tye

Nice!

Maybe I’m like you. I don’t like a big pile of books at my home. I don’t save them.

DonDavis 02-26-2019 01:13 PM

Cliff, Cliff, Cliff....that's like watching a RomCom or the Notebook.
Is Fabio in the book you're reading? Those chicks are hitting on you. And by turning them away, you may have unwittingly indicated you play for the other team. :p
Not that there's anything wrong with that. Nope, not at all.

911boost 02-26-2019 01:59 PM

I had a 17.5 hour flight the other day and read almost the whole time I was awake, except for taking a break to watch the original “Point Break”, such great acting....

Been through two Kindles and use the app now on an older iPad Mini. I still pick up a paper book every once in a while.

I read Hustler...the articles are well stimulating...

wildthing 02-26-2019 02:33 PM

I used to read a lot. In elementary, high school, college, and not school books either. Like one book a week, then one book a month...tried to keep it up early in my career. The past 15 years, more like one fiction book a year, lucky if I get to read two, the rest are magazines, and then there's TV, movies, kids... I should get back to reading books. Maybe that will be my next goal.

"Dreams" by CG Jung..

I just picked up The Empire and the Five Kings. I'll see what this guy has to say.

I've been reading Bourdain's books.
Recently a PCA friend loaned me Derek Bell My Racing Life. It's been signed by Derek Bell so the book never leaves my house. I only read it at home.

stealthn 02-26-2019 06:14 PM

I really don’t enjoy reading on the iPad, but a book really has to be good to get me to read it.

Last one was Bad Blood and OMG is it good, 300 pages and I read it in two nights.

I most read autobiography’s but I do like non-fiction.

dan79brooklyn 02-27-2019 01:49 AM

From 6th grade through High School a read A LOT, mostly fiction.
These days I’m more interested in history or biographies. But I can only make it through a book a year, just too busy with other stuff.

I’m fascinated by the space program. So I started this hardcover:

Currently reading "Where the Forest meets the Stars" by Glendy Vanderah on my new Kindle Fire. Love the new Kindle it is backlit, that is dimmable so I can read at night in bed without being blinded...also many games to play while on an airplane, or bored.
