Vegetable garden thread
 

Now that my wife and I are retired we decided to grow a garden this year . In the past we have done tomatoes and cucumbers in containers . Today we planted this year's garden . We planted carrots , cucumbers , broccoli , corn and tomatoes . The garden is approx 5 ' x 15 ' and is enclosed with 4 ' tall poultry fence supported by metal fence posts .

This is our first time on this scale and if everything that we planted grows we will probably have more than we need. Hopefully the fence will keep out the rabbits and deer . So what have you guys and gals planted this year ?

Garlic- definitely our favorite to grow and harvest. . Snap peas. We did blue potatos one year that were delicious but their greens blocked too much sun from the other vegetables. We plant in 4x 8 raised beds. Cucumbers. Strawberries- the kids love finding them. All sorts of herbs. Fennel and asparagus.

Grape tomatoes and cucumbers. I snack on the tomatoes like chips. Cucumbers mostly go to the neighbors. Did green beans one year but they take up too much space for the return.

I've done it for years.

THis year I've decided that $100 and 100 hours is too much to pay for 40-50 tomatoes... ...cause all the excitement my kids have about gardening goes out the window when it comes time to weed the garden. :D

My small garden is now a bust because my maple tree shades it.
Any recommendations on what I can plant that doesn't need sun?

This. For example, my wife paid $6 for beet plant starters, to harvest what would be $2 at the store.

For me it's not about saving money at the produce stand. I just like making things grow. But I've now invested more in flowers than veggies.

Moss ?

Rhubarb grows in the shade and is perennial. Easy.
Lettuce seems to do better out of full sunlight.

The only shade vegetable I can think of is bok choi - and mushrooms of course.

I planted 7 half wine/whiskey barrels this weekend. This is 5 of 7 barrels planted. Just outside my driveway which is in a private alley in a area that gets sun most of the day. Planted tomatoes full size and cherry, red & yellow bell peppers, jalapeno & anaheim peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, kale, celery, arugula, eggplant, strawberries, rosemary, thyme, basil, and cilantro. not done planting yet and will add a few more things this week.

If you have deer (who doesn't....I saw about 8 passing through the woods a few weeks ago), they will love yer garden. They can hop over 4' (even 6') effortlessly....and they like do like buffets ;)

Vern. I lived in Fresberg for years long ago (graduated from FHS). Do you have to give your plants a lot of water in consideration of the summer heat?
Growing a garden here is a major project. People enclose their gardens on all four sides plus top and bottom with mesh. One neighbor grows a garden in his enclosed patch. He did raise chickens. He had predators coming around - foxes, coyotes, bob cats, etc., etc. When a mountain lion started showing interest, he decided to get rid of the chickens.

There are a number of ways to deter deer, motion sensor sprinklers, urine from predators, among other things

You can't buy tomatoes like you can grow, same with peaches.

I am so tempted to scale off that pic. The spacing looks damn near perfect.

I stil need to set up my irrigation, Tomatoes 5 each of Sungold, Early Girl and Better Boy or Big Boy, something like that. 5 Anaheim Chile, 5 Jalapeno and bunch of Butternut Squash seeds I started, Zucchini and some melon seeds that I am not exactly sure of the variety, mother nature will surprise me.

I seriously have like 15 or 20 Butternut Squash plants, planted a whole pack and they all came up, oops. Already gave a dozen of them to my mom. If you have a spot for a couple and the wife likes them, I have you covered. I planted a few as a goof last year, and it turns out my mom and daughter like them a lot. I had no idea they were kind of pricey, $5 in the store, or that is what my daughter told me when I gave her a couple. A hard squash so they stay good for a LONG time, don't harvest until the fall, like a pumpkin. Good roasted with a little brown sugar or in soup.

I guess I can plant them all and give the produce to Loaves and Fishes around Halloween, that is actually not a bad idea, or find out how long they will keep.
