Watched someone get hustled yesterday

The local Home Depot is usually a zoo on Saturdays when the weather is nice - yours probably is too. The routine is to line up down the wide middle isle and wait for a cashier to free up. Invariably, someone doesn't know the drill and will just waltz up into what seems like a really short line, not realizing there are 20 people already in the queue behind them.

I was waiting in said line yesterday when I saw an older woman dash up to a cashier right as the previous customer was picking up his bag. She only had one small item. The cashier tried to explain that the line was "back there" but the lady did her best я не говорю по английски and started getting her wallet out, so the cashier relented and grabber her item to scan it. That's when the lady gave the signal to whom I assume was her son, who came rushin' up (no pun intended - or was it?) with a huge cart full of stuff.

The hustle was beautifully executed, which makes me believe this wasn't their first rodeo. I was in awe of the choreography, while at the same time I wanted to beat them both over the head with someone heavy but easily cleanable.

I was in a line in London last year. Big big line. A group of people walk towards the end of the line, one woman in front. Front woman turns around to group and says "there you are! I've been saving a place for you." I told them to get to the end of the F'n line.

If you want to break this down analytically - the person to blame is the person who was next in line. It's THEIR responsibility - not the cashier - to govern and/or manage who is served next.

Ever sit in a line of cars at a light - the lights changes - and it takes the cars in front of you twice-three times the necessary amount of time to clear the light so you can get through?

Or - when a traffic lane merges.......how that is managed by those in the main lane - how they let merging traffic in.

Same exact deal in a store.

Shouldn't come down to fisticuffs - you have to use your body (or vehicle) to send the right message. Eye contact and hand gestures are also very helpful.

It's all about awareness.

Many are pretty clueless, and thus civilisation suffers for it.

It takes chutzpah, that's for sure. And, it's not always easy, but I try to take the high road when that happens and not let it weigh me down. (Ommmmmmmmmmmmm)

Hey, maybe the guy that was first in line didn't get into a traffic accident or maybe he found gold doubloons because of the delay.

Another one that makes me laugh is the person who cuts in line because she "just has one item" and sort of does the ask while she's bulldozing her way in. (Yeah, it's usually a woman, at least in my experience. Happened just the other day, I smiled and then me and the cashier had an unspoken moment).

First of all, cool that your HD has the single line system. The only place besides banks that do that here is Harbor Freight.

Well, I agree that the folks in line should have rushed the cashier to force them to not start the process to check out the scammer. This in turn would have gotten security's or management's attention.

Thom, if you were last in line there was no skin in the game but nevertheless, I am prone to yell out loudly when I see an inequity such as this. Disruption is effective sometimes. And I've done that several times.

The one incident that comes to mind is the shopper parked next to the handicapped parking space and after unloading their cart, shoves it square into the center of the HC space. When I saw this at about 30 feet I yelled out for the whole lot to hear, "What, you gonna let the handicapped person get out and move that for you?"

Got a few laughs actually, but the jerk just got in his car and left. I, of course, moved the cart to the rack.

Edit: Told my wife about this thread and she told me a story about being in a line at some store that used the conveyor belt (not grocery). She's got a couple items that she just placed on the belt when the end cleared when the Asian lady behind her rams her lightly with her cart and while reaching around my wife starts to place her siht on the belt as it inched forward — no bar separating the purchases. So, wife turns around and says loud enough for all to hear, "And am I supposed to pay for your things too?" She says some of the people in line began to clap. That's all of 115 pounds of feisty at work.

I would have inserted myself into the situation. No way shyt like that goes down in front of me without a big stink. I was in a long carwash line a couple weeks ago & left a gap for cars to exit. Asian guy cuts into the gap in front of me. I toot my horn & he ignores me, then I give a longer beep, still nothing. He drove off when I started to exit my car.

No wholesale condemnation here but different cultures have ways to get things done that we aren't used to.
Many years ago, my wife and I had a early morning garage sale.
We were still setting up and got "bum-rushed" by five people of the Eastern Bloc.
They ripped off some stuff which in reality... was the reason why we were getting rid of it.
Pissed me off.

Yea... what they did was planned and not right but as the earlier poster suggested... the person in line should have just said "no... get back in line."

I make my trips to HD and Lowes on Friday nights to avoid this kind of thing.

Yeah, it was the fault of the people in line who let it go down. If I was in that line, there would have been a problem. I'm usually in a bad mood to start with if I'm @ HD. The one that is local to me is the busiest HD on earth, (Hollywood), and it's a schit show.

I recently parked in the "pro parking" to pick up some material but I was in my car. Some guy in a beat-up Dodge PU behind me started yelling, "Hey! That's Pro parking!"

I turned around and said, "Yes, and I'm more of a pro than you, you fking clown." The other grunts loading their trucks laughed and he skulked away. I hate that place.

Not proud of this but was reminded of it.

Was waiting in the drive thru st a McDonalds. The line turns as you are pulling up to the order speaker. A car cut in front of me at that turn, (the gap made as the cars turn is what gave them the opening. After the speakr thing the drive up had a planter that make the money, and order window a lane you could not pull out of.

When the guy pulled in front just daring me to hit their car and otherwise ignoring me, I left and when to the Wendy's across the street. As I odered at Wendy's could see across the street they McDonalds window was being really show so order m self and extra, large drink.

Pulling out of Wendy's looked over and the guy that cut in front am me at McDonalds was stil the car behind the one getting their meal. So, shot across the street, when around the McDonalds and pukked up next to the guy that had cut in front of me and was still one car from the pick up window. Motioned for them to roll down their window. both the front and back windows came down. I yelled i/m the guy you cut in front of and I found Wendiy's is much faster, then threw the extra drink in their front window with no lid, then drove off.

Felt every bit of that large drink's worth of satisfaction and then some!

I recently upgraded to a different HD. No lines, friendly people, no illegals loitering, it's fabulous!

walking into a store, about 35 feet from entering , woman 15 foot in front of me drops her 1/2 finished cigarette still smoking and glowing onto the sidewalk. Even if it was only the Butt, still would be wrong..........but....... this was 2+ inches long and lit.

I stopped over it and paused, she kept walking, didn't even stomp the glowing embers out.

She kept her stride, I picked up the cig, got in her face, I Said "oh I'm so sorry mam, you must of dropped this............and I put it back between her lips, before she could speak.
