O.K. It's fun to reminisce, but is this hotel really going to... fly? I mean, other than as a weekend lark for those who recall the 60s through the foggy haze of nostalgia, who is going to stay here? It's austere, inside and outside, and it's noisy! I just can't imagine lounging with a 'Watermelon Collins' after a dip in a pool overlooking 'one of the biggest runways at the fifth busiest airport in the United States." -- unquote

For an early flight it’s hard to beat staying right at the airport. I’ve done it many times, the closer the better. A little charisma is just a bonus. As a business traveler I would totally stay here.

I would stay there for a short visit to New York, absolutely. I grew up flying internationally when that place was in it's heyday and I remember TWA, PanAm and the others with fondness. I even have photos of myself decked out in a coat and tie for long, international flights.

I love the smell of jet fuel and watching airport operations. I should have made a career out of aviation, but went down a different path.

Stories, with pics, or I get the pitchforks out

I sent this thread to an older friend of mine who was a Connie pilot in the Navy...he is threatening to meet me there and try and get me on the Connie.

Same here. When I’m travelling for work convenience is a huge bonus. If I can get close to where I need to be, and get a cool place to stay, I’m all for it. Someone else is footing the bill, so as long as it’s under my spending limit I’d do it! . Sadly my work takes me to the PNW way more than it does the east coast, but as a MCM geek I’d love to check it out.

I'm sure people will drop in just for the TWA tea.

Yeah, but are you guys going to swim in the track-side 'vanishing point' pool? With all that exhaust in the atmosphere. And not all of it coming from jet engines; but cars, buses, taxis, goats... wait are there goats in Queens? Oh yeah, Jamaican goats down on Ocean Parkway.

I stayed at O'Hare airport , snowed in .. All night I could hear them de-icing the wings.. airports can be super convenient places to sleep but noisy and smelly, Jet A has particular odor, likes to hang in the air.
While this structure is an absolute masterpiece of architecture, right up there with Corbusier's Ronchamp, I probably won't be staying overnight there, heck I live 44 min from the airport..but I will for sure grab a cocktail and stroll around. Why didn't an airline just take it as their terminal? You could see Swiss Air or Virgin Airlines in there. It was the ONLY good thing about TWA back in the day, a reason to fly that airliner out of that airport. Eero Saarinen showed us a future that didn't exactly arrive. Glad this building was saved.

I, for one, am glad they saved the building. I'm 55 and clearly remember travelling through that terminal many times as a young kid in the 60's and early 70's when TWA was our airline of choice between LAX, JFK, and the large cities of Europe. As a pilot, I'm at JFK often these days and one of the things that's so psychologically strange for me is that the old terminal building is now just an island all by itself, with the newer Jetblue terminal now occupying the space that used to be the live airside ramp area for the old TWA Flight Center.

It wasn't on the website... I ripped that off from someone's Facebook page... those people were just messing around and got one of their party to snap that (and a few of the other photos I posted).
