Cure for pain

The State of Oklahoma is engaged in a trial against Johnson & Johnson, seeking to recover damages for the company's alleged contribution to the opioid epidemic. Purdue Pharma already settled for a $270M, which will hardly put a dent in the fortunes the Sackler crime family has earned over the years peddling oxycontin as "safe" even though they knew better. But J&J wanted to go to trial.

I prefer that states bring these sorts of actions instead of private parties; it removes the distortion of lawyers trying to get wealthy on 40% contingencies. I also like the fact that they are tying it before a judge, who will explain the legal reasoning behind whatever ruling he makes and who will (hopefully) be less swayed by emotions than juries can be in these types of cases.

It will be interesting to see how this ends up.

I don't think this is political personally. Any company that blatantly misleads people should be held accountable. If J&J knew it was a high risk drug and peddled it as a low risk pain management solution, they should be held accountable.
Now, can we get back to talking about bourbon?

It's my understanding, that J&J is very different than Purdue (Sackler family) in the way it is marketed, prescribed and abused. I could be wrong. The only reason J&J is being sued is because the others have settled.

Grewal said New Jersey spent tens of millions of dollars on prescription opioids through its state employee health plans, and the lawsuit seeks to recoup any money that was unnecessarily spent on drugs sold by Purdue Pharma.

Seems to me NJ is the culprit here, lack of safeguard in the state health plan?

It's political, nothing more. You have to see the connection between various legislatures around the country and the judicial process, 2 out 3 branches of GOVERNMENT.

I don't mind one bit having a discussion about this lawsuit, but 1) don't sneak this in on me as a "cure for pain." For some reason that just pissed me off like someone sold me a stolen tool, and 2) take this where it belongs because this is going to be a highly charged political discussion.

I know I can place members on Ignore but what would be as good is to be able tp place a block on a thread or general subject. Still, ol' Mad would have still fooled me.

Umm... prescription. Can't be gotten on the state plan (or any other) unless prescribed.

So... back to the doctors... who are too many individuals to go after one by one by one... but the docs were told by the sales reps, etc. that it was safe.... Almost makes sense in a way.

This is nothing but a bald faced grab for cash by blood sucking shysters.

All of them get sued, the guilty ones settle to cut their losses.

I hope J+J prevails. Too bad you can't sue the FDA and have snowball's chance in hell of winning.

Perhaps, but if the OK AG proves what he laid out in his opening statement, they were bad actors. But to me the more interesting issue is the extent to which they should have to pay for the negative externalities of their business, regardless of their intentions.
