Made in America

The other thread got me thinking. Someone made the comment that they can easily avoid made is China products by filtering wants vs. needs. That made a lot of sense to me. I did not search there may be a thread like this I did not have time to scour the forums to see.

Sometimes you want to need something so I thought, why not have a thread where we can share cool products made in America?

I have 4 items I could think of off the top of my head 3 are car related and I have purchased from each of these companies. I have no affiliation with any of these outside purchasing from them.

Sun shade for your car that in my opinion is the best ever made, so much so I have one for every car I own and give them as gifts.

https://www.heatshieldstore.com/

All my work vehicles get these floor mats, there are cheaper ones out there, nothing beats the quality of Weather Tech.

https://www.weathertech.com/

If you want to make the interior of your car pop with class, Cocomats is the only way to go. I purchased a set for my wifes E30. Every time she gets in it she comments the floor mats are a wonderful surprise that makes her smile every time she sees them.

The last mailbox you will ever buy. I have one and it is a beast. I love their slogan. I can attest the mailbox is substantial.

Agreed, but I did think this was amusing. At least they got the photo right in the inset.

This is great though, because I need a good heat shield to replace the one that I've got.

I have a Covercraft sun shade in my 911. It is a custom fit, and made in Pauls Valley, OK. My sun shade is 15 years old, and still in great shape, and gets a lot of use.

They too have a complete line of car covers and sunshades.

Tools...SK, snap-on, both USA...yes spendy, but good quality. Glad I got my "USA" stamped Craftsman stuff before they went to the dark side.

The weather tech mats in my Tacoma are 4 years old now and still look as good as the day I bought them except for them being dirty a lot. I was ruining the stock rubber mats in my FJ Cruiser so I purchased a set of Weather Tech mats for it so I can preserve the OG mats, especially since Toyota stopped making them.

The point of this thread was stuff made in America, please start a great products made in China thread if you want.

I think there was a thread on here where the OP finally figured out in his 60's, sometimes buying something good once is better than buying cheap crap over and over again.

I figured that out in my 30's. I prefer to buy a good quality product built to last over cheap crap I have to replace over and over again.

My backyard dining set cost me $1200, it was made locally and is made of teak wood. I expect to have it for many many years and it looks fantastic.

sorry to step on your toes.

i'll see myself out.

As my Grandfather used to say "The most expensive thing you can do is buy cheap". The Weber gas grill I just bought is made in the USA. 10 year warranty, replacement parts readily available and it's built like a tank.

It's weird when you get older and buy really good stuff and think "Man, this thing will probably out live me!".

Truth.

My Weber grill just turned 20 years old, no sign of it failing me. 3 years ago I replaced the burners and diffusers with stainless. I think I am good for another 20 years now.

Prior to that I went through a cheap grill every 2-4 years as they fell apart before my eyes.

Cooper tires on the truck, designed and made in USA.

Goodyear Eagles on the Porsche, made in USA.

Made in USA is a consideration for me, I take the time to do the research.

Edit-1:
At least half my stereo equipment is made in USA.

Edit-2:

My 30 year old bicycle that still works just fine.

Great Eastern Cutlery pocket knives
Spyderco knives- most are USA made
Leatherman- the higher end stuff still USA
Weber grills

All my guitar gear is USA made except for gretsch which is owned by fender but made in Japan

There are 2 Chinese companies which make great products I am proud to own. 1 Olight flashlights. 2 Sangean radios/short wave radios. Love both companies. Both companies seem to take pride in what they design and build. Most Chinese stuff is garbage

I wore a hole through my weathertech Matt with my heal in 12 months. I would buy them again but I wasn’t happy about that

One thing that bugs me is bicycles. If you want a made in USA high end bike be prepared to spend about $6 to 10k

herr_oberst 06-12-2019 04:45 PM

I've used Weather Tech mats for years - currently on my third set for my 92 Toyota. I started out with the grey ones, in thick rubber, (ribbed for my pleasure), not the thinner, molded plasticky ones with the high sides for ultimate water retention. They didn't last as long as I would have liked, and when I contacted WT they agreed that the black rubber ones had superior wear characteristics, so that's what I've been using since, and I'm pretty happy...

(edit) do they still make the grey ones? I haven't checked in decades.

They did when I bought mine for my Taco 4 years ago. They are holding up fine.

I put similar to the grey except black in my FJ.

I was more concerned about total coverage / protection vs. heavy duty.

We get in and out of both trucks about 15-20 times a day and are usually tracking mud and dirt in with us, occasional dog poop too. (thanks for picking up after your pets!!)

It is nice to be able to take them out, spray them down with simple green and power wash them off.

Or how about the best diesel truck motors in the world - Cummins built in Columbus, Indiana.

My new RV has a fridge made in America, well it's all made in America with Bethlehem steel.

onewhippedpuppy 06-12-2019 07:20 PM

Just replaced the one year old Weathertechs in my wife's Flex because they had already started to fade and curl. Check out Husky Liners, made an hour from me in Winfield, KS.:) They are thicker, more rigid, and have better coverage. I’ve been a LONG time Weathertech customer but feel that the last few sets I’ve bought have been cheaper than expected.

As for made in the USA, I’ll happily pay a little more when there’s an option, particularly when that is the quality option.

Mine is 8. It’s ready to be replaced. They sent me a new top to replace the rusted out one on there, but I got a base black top instead of the double walled stainless one that was on it originally.
For the $1200 the replacement will cost I can buy 5 of these.

I used one on Memorial Day and they can be made to get insanely hot compared to the Weber. Sear steak properly or cook pizza hot.

If it lasts 2 years it’s still better value...

My Weber is 37 years old....

Bought it at Builders Emporium on Azusa Ave & San Bernardino rd. in March 1982 on sale for $39.95. It had previsously been at Ralph's Grocery stores..the tag on it.

My dad bought sprinkler system components there when he was landscaping the house in Glendora in the late 50's. Soon after I bought the Weber BE went bk.

These are made in the USA, are very neat , useful and high quality (individual replacement parts are available, too). I have many of them, including the supersized one in the link, and have used them daily for years.

I used to have a branding on the inside of my cabinets that says "Made in Los Angeles". I haven't done it in a long time. All of our plywood is from the pacific northwest but all our hardware are from Germany (normally) or Italy. We just installed a pocket door using a Swiss made hardware. Great stuff. I try and buy quality produce so it doesn't matter where its made.

All of my "metrology" gear is older Starrett (mostly USA made).
The one on the left was made in the Jedburgh, Scotland Starrett factory.

+1 ...If USA is better, and competitive....no brainer.

To quote Dylan from 35 years ago...one of my favorite albums with Mick Taylor and Mark Knopfler...

"Sundown on the Union, made in the USA,
Sure was a good idea, until greed got in the way"

It was SO true then....and here we are....YMMV.

Self-inflicted in order to gain access to their markets...corporate america greed at it's fine$t hour :(.

Some farmers literally bet their farms over the past couple of decades too....hogs and soybeans...now they have NOBODY to sell too?
So taxpayers have picked up their tabs too?

Speaking of tabs....:)

China will welcome tariffs with roses, easy-peasy trade war...over in 6 weeks tops!

Going perfectly....according to plan (err....tweets) :(...

Some Oakley sunglasses
Some Wolverine boots
Some New Balance shoes

Seeing Tabs comment on his Weber... SOME Weber grills.. not all

BTW, not impressed with the fit of my Weathertech floor mats in my F250. I called and they told me to leave them out in the sun. I said "I thought they were laser measure for fit, mine don't fit, they're too loose."

Try Husky Liners! The front Weathertech mats in my F150 have always been loose, they have faded from black to a blotchy gray so I’ll probably replace them before long.

I looked it up, and got frustrated with the Quora and Wikipedia results so I just took a photo of the darn thing. Somewhere in the paperwork or on another label on the bike it lists the state, Tennessee, Georgia or South Carolina, one of those states that manufacturing fled to in the late 1980's before going out of country.

I bought the bike around 1990, who are you going to believe, the Internet or the actual physical bike?

Derby Manufactured Frames (1989-1992*)

Circa 1989, Nishiki was acquired by Derby International, which also owned Raleigh and some manufacturing was done at their Kent, Washingtion facility.
Perhaps some explanation in that thread.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/390318-nishiki-serial-number-database.html
Quote:

However, an educated guess is that by this time the remaining Kawamura manufacturing had shifted to several non-Japanese manufacturers as a result of the yen revaluation that started in late 1985. By 1987, the yen had doubled in value agasinst the US dollar, making Japanese manufactured bicycle much more expensive.

And finally, this explanation - I you choose to believe it:

Quote:

Hope this helps

Oh ya, also...when I sold them, Nishiki was owned by Derby Cycles which also owned Raleigh (and later Univega and Diamond Back). Now I don't know about your bike, but by '96, Raleigh and Nishiki were both painted and assymbled up in Kent, Washington. However, the frames were actually made in China or Taiwan and sent over to be finished in the USA. They said "made in the USA", but that was kind of deceptive.
The above says by 1996, so this excludes the late 1980 and early 1990 models like mine I assume.

My semi-photographic memory must have remembered "Raleigh" and that's North Carolina, same region of country as other southern states I mentioned - things get twisted after 30 years.:o

Interesting reading the comments on floor mats.

In the 14 years of ownership (so far) I have never used floor mats in my '02 Silverado.

It is my work truck and in my line of work (landscaping) I certainly do my share of work in dirty conditions. Not so much mud - I avoid working in those conditions pretty much. Plus our soils here are more sandy than anything else. I get mostly shell on my floor board than anything else and just use a whisk broom to sweep it out periodically.

I think I have mats in my Porsches though - just OEM carpet versions. They don' get very dirty though.

Our quality control is very high and a set of our mats will not ship unless it meets our tough standards. Mats and heel pads are double stitched around the edge so that fibers don't come loose, heel pads are straight, vinyl edging is correct, and all matting material is aligned. Every mat goes through a quality check at each stage of our production steps, as well as before shipping out, ensuring you the best product available.

And does anyone have trouble getting their mats unbuttoned from the door? Seems I nearly have to rip the carpet out getting them off. I don’t even bother buttoning them down anymore because I’m pretty sure one of these days my carpets will get really damaged

In terms of clothing, I have a few pieces from www.american-giant.com and hoodies from Flint and Tinder.

Heck even J.Crew has some T-shirts made in LA.

Some of the items at www.taylorstitch.com are made here, but not all. I have a few of them.

A few pants from www.jomers.com are made here. I have two.

For clothing, the question is, are they any better than made in China? Probably not, if using the same materials.

I have a few Allen Edmonds shoes that are made here. Again, here, it is more the way it's made rather than where it is made.

Apparently there are guidelines for saying "made in USA", so some just say built/assembled in USA from imported materials.
