That Alpha Romeo TV ad

I’m disturbed by the Alpa Romeo TV ad that depicts driving as a video game. Yes, driving should be fun and I get it that that is the message they are trying to convey, but it’s not the kind of fun where you can hit pause or get do-overs if you make a mistake. I think it’s irresponsible t conflate the two.

When I wuz a kid and watched Dr. J....

Somehow....I knew I could NOT do that ;).

See....I actually went outside and tried.

What we need to do is take away helmets, give kidz a bike....be home by dark :)....

There is a real world awaitin'.....yep.

This would be a much better commercial. That one above was frustrating me, I just wanted to see the car go. So I found this. edit - car appears very twitchy at speed.

BTW it's ALFA Romeo
Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili
Nicola Romeo saved the company, why it was added.

I am on the fence. I did not like the freestyle segment for the same reasons as you.

However these are $50k+ cars and older peeps who have driven plenty are the ones who can afford.

speeder 06-15-2019 08:28 AM

Not a lot of car guys on this weird little forum. "Alpha" Romeo?

I guess they are a new company, only around for about 100+ years w a racing history much richer than Peorshu.

I heard this in Parris.......

That little guy coming out of the snakes mouth in the Alfa logo has something to do with being reborn. He's not being eaten.

I spelled surprise, "suprise" my whole life until I wanted to see what was up with that silly spell checker a few years ago.

After watching the ad, I can understand the O.P.'s point. I dunno...is it any more a fantasy than a high fashion dressed hottie driving a car on uncrowded city streets? Or, an actor making a pool table trick shot, then climbing into his luxobarge equipped with star trek electronics?

Car ads..all seem to be jokes these days.

When we bought Cindy's Camry, I asked where the cute brunette was...

stealthn 06-15-2019 03:35 PM

Man! Did that ring driver ever earn his paycheque...

I get what you are saying, but would a video game ad appeal to older peeps?
Not me for sure.
I don't know who those ads are meant to appeal to. It seems dumb to target people like me who can afford an ALFA, and equally dumb to target young video game enthusiasts who can't afford them.

Thanks.

I'd never seen it cuz I'm not hooked up to network TV, but I watched just now to see what all the fuss was about. The video didn't do anything for me up or down, just more colorful digital images trying to entice me to buy a car that I know will be worthless or broken or both in five years...

BUT!

The cover version of Wicked Game really made me look up! Wow, what a voice and what an arrangement of a song that I've always really liked. (Hint - take a listen on a dark deserted highway in the middle of the night with someone you really like!)

But they have done far better ads:

There is an absolutely unlimited supply of young people, (born in 1980s or '90s), who can afford that car here in CA. Also in other major metropolitan areas, I would imagine. People like you must be incredibly cut off from the urban economy of 21st century USA. There has never been more $$ around and a lot of it is in the hands of young people.

The Qf still needs a V8.

Touche! Commercials are made to get your attention - The Alfa commercial doesn't bother me. The Fiat commercial doesn't either, although I can see some taking offense to it. Those in marketing know who and how to target the audience for products.

One of my favorite episodes of "Victory By Design":

Yes, and glad for it. I am surrounded by corn fields north and south and I cannot see my nearest neighbor’s house.

That’s cool, whatever makes you happy. But there is a raging economy going on in the big city that is making young people flush. Waiters making 6-figures in NY/LA/SF. There are enough rich 20-somethings in SF alone to buy every Alfa in the U.S. I don’t really see it appealing to old people.
