The new GT4 release video & Porsche talks about the future of GT models

In case you missed it, Porsche released this electrifying video highlighting the new 2020 Porsche 718 GT4. Now the only Cayman with a flat-six, you can expect 414hp/309tq which increases it by 29 ponies over the 2016 model. It comes with a six-speed manual and are looking to avoid turbo lag altogether. Read more what car & driver has to say about it here.

Speaking of electrifying, Porsche says the future for the GT's will not be electrified.

Quote:
There are ideas to maybe look in that direction for the normal sports car line but not for the GT cars," Preuninger told Autocar. "If we would decide to make all the racing cars electrified overnight, then we would have a reason to look into that but, as always, it has to be a connection between the cars we use on the track to the cars we sell with a number plate attached.
What are your thoughts? More on that here.

That video makes my eyeballs hurt. It doesn't make me want to trade in my Cayman S 987.2 with 6-speed either.

That's the one new Porsche I want more than my 2014 981S, but after 6 years with the 981, I'm still as happy as can be and couldn't imagine a car being much better.

Oh I’d love one, would even consider selling my launch Cayman for it...

That video sucked. Maybe 14 year old boys will like it.

Back in 2011 I was at Roebling Road in my 911 chewing up tires and having fun. I had done two 20 minute sessions by lunch time. The local dealer had a box stock right from the showroom floor, Cayman R there. They hired a "local driver" that said it was his home track. They were giving rides and I went out with him in the red group, with other instructors in race prepped cars.

That Cayman R was just orders of magnitude faster than my old 85 911. At the end of the straight, into turn one I was hard on the imaginary brake pedal on my side and he was still accelerating, he slowed just a bit, and we rocketed around the corner. It was a really fast ride, and the driver was in 100% control like driving a slot car. It made me list for one. Then I remembered my faithful 911 that has been paid for since the last millennium, and I did two more 20 minute sessions, and drove it all the way home with no issues on the same tires.

IMHO it's what the Cayman S should have been already.

Don't get me wrong. I will NEVER sell my '84 911 Carrera. It has a kinetic feel that the heavier Cayman can not match. The nibbly front tires when turning in a parking lot, to the bolt action shifter on the 915 with the Wevo is simply not something that I'll ever give up. I MIGHT be tempted to trade in the 2011 Cayman if something more to my liking comes up, but to me it's not worth it. The harsher GTS and R are sort of what the Turbo was to the Carrera. If I wanted the Turbo, then I'd have gotten one.

It's Porsche's version of a Ken Block video without all of the tire smoke.

I'm pretty sure my '08 Boxster S RS60 Spyder with the 305hp 3.4L could take it.

Holy Moly, regardless of the reason (new tech), it's damned impressive that this thing is as fast around the 'Ring as the Carrera GT, at least, that's what they say in this video.

According to MotorTrend
"Then you come across this number: 7 minutes, 28 seconds. That's the lap time Porsche says the 718 Cayman GT4 turned in at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. "

According to the Internet, "Walter Rohrl reportedly did it in 7:28 flat (in the Carrera GT)"

I’m on the list for the GT4, I can find only 1 negative - no front axle lift, shame on Porsche for this, otherwise amazing!
