Same. The Airbus is still noisy. And flying east coast west coast east coast. Having a little music in the background is relaxing. I think it’s actually a bit safer. Keeping me awake and all. I’ve done 2 four day trips and managed to burn through a set of batteries. I’ll keep a spare set around. But I’m thinking 40-50 hours battery life.

How the Dumb Design of a WWII Plane Led to the Macintosh

Quote:

Instead of “pilot error,” he saw what he called, for the first time, “designer error.”

The reason why all those pilots were crashing when their B-17s were easing into a landing was that the flaps and landing gear controls looked exactly the same. The pilots were simply reaching for the landing gear, thinking they were ready to land. And instead, they were pulling the wing flaps, slowing their descent, and driving their planes into the ground with the landing gear still tucked in. Chapanis came up with an ingenious solution: He created a system of distinctively shaped knobs and levers that made it easy to distinguish all the controls of the plane merely by feel, so that there’s no chance of confusion even if you’re flying in the dark.

By law, that ingenious bit of design—known as shape coding—still governs landing gear and wing flaps in every airplane today. And the underlying idea is all around you: It’s why the buttons on your videogame controller are differently shaped, with subtle texture differences so you can tell which is which. It’s why the dials and knobs in your car are all slightly different, depending on what they do. And it’s the reason your virtual buttons on your smartphone adhere to a pattern language.

Kudos to the Philippine Air pilot who landed a fully fueled 777X with one engine.
Experience counts

Even though they didnt run the checklist and didnt dump fuel and landed overweight and blew the right three main gear tires upon heaving braking, yes, great job..

The tires blew their heat plugs and deflated like they are designed to when they over heat instead of exploding catastrophically. Normally they don't dump fuel at that low altitude when they don't have to. LAX is plenty long to allow an overweight landing. I think they did the right thing. Got the plane safely on the ground as fast as they could.

When I was young, I mowed the lawn of a retired Air Force colonel who played a role in the F-111 program. He had a couple photos of an F-111 flying in a similar configuration. He said it was staged during flight testing to understand what happens if a wing fails to sweep/unsweep.

yep that aircraft is a prototype/test bed

I thought this was interesting, after watching "The Right Stuff"

Thank you. It is a long time family member that left for a bunch of years and is now back. Hanger is not ours, but where the work is being done.

In his book he said he punched out on #13 of 14 rotations. He also mentioned he had too high of an angle of attack is why he lost control.

This is probably one of the more expensive ways to tow a sled. (One of the best looking lightweight fighters out there by the way)

AMAZING!

I literally have seen The Right Stuff over 100 times and had no idea there was film of Yeager’s NF-104 flight. I joined the Air Force after being inspired by the film.

The movie recreation looks like it was pretty true to life. . . Except for the fact Yeager was in that flat spin for what seemed like an eternity. Lucky he didn’t black out.
