After losing so many bombers without fighter escorts, the US once trolled the Luftwaffe fighters with a single heavily modified B-17 which returned wrecked but mostly whole or holely.
It would have served well as tail in many engagements.

Read about ol' 666 sometime and the crew taking on a pack of A6M Zeros.

(Japan and the Pacific Theater was my first guess/recall but a brief search indicated otherwise so I changed it. Thx for the link.)

Those A6M Zeke/Zeros still had a couple of 20mm cannons in addition to the rifle ammo.
Just not enough.

While living on Guam in the mid 1960s, our house in Agaña was right below the approach to the Naval Air Station. I spent a lot of time taking photos of whatever flew over the house. Here is a Navy C121.

Definitely NOT a 'Zero'. It's gear would have been retracted.

That is a fixed gear plane. Like a 'Nate' maybe.

Found it: It was a Ki-51 Sonia Dive Bomber that hit the Sussex.
Fixed Gear aircraft.

to be fair.. 't was a good try at a Banksy .. waaaaay ahead of his time.

I think I saw that plane spray painted under an overpass.

Douglas A3 Skywarrior. (AKA:Whale) Taken from my back yard on Guam. They would do touch and goes all evening. A big distraction while trying to do my homework in 8th and 9th grades.
