After losing so many bombers without fighter escorts, the US once trolled the Luftwaffe fighters with a single heavily modified B-17 which returned wrecked but mostly whole or holely.
It would have served well as tail in many engagements.

Those A6M Zeke/Zeros still had a couple of 20mm cannons in addition to the rifle ammo.
Just not enough.

While living on Guam in the mid 1960s, our house in Agaņa was right below the approach to the Naval Air Station. I spent a lot of time taking photos of whatever flew over the house. Here is a Navy C121.

Found it: It was a Ki-51 Sonia Dive Bomber that hit the Sussex.
Fixed Gear aircraft.

Douglas A3 Skywarrior. (AKA:Whale) Taken from my back yard on Guam. They would do touch and goes all evening. A big distraction while trying to do my homework in 8th and 9th grades.
