My sister and her husband are going. Supposed to rain this weekend. Not so good for the air races, not so bad for the forest fires.

Most figured lack of vis from smoke would get them canceled... I'd have gone if not for a funeral last week..

Bobby is/was short balding blue eyed white guy from tranquility... here's the deal though you wouldn't probably make a connection to that description as easily as you would that he called himself the one armed bandit.... because he only had the one arm.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1663367904.jpg

Winner winner chicken dinner!!! Yup, I remember him and met and talked with him on several occasions. Been several years though. Really nice guy from what I remember, good sense of humor too.

Sorry to hear about the funeral. This year has been a gut buster for us too.

The vis on the live stream today wasn’t to good due to the smoke. Past couple of days have been severe clear here locally, then thick chunky crappy air all day today. I waited to the last minute to get tickets last night because of all the unknowns this year.

Yeah, we saw that rain is forecasted Sunday. That is the wildcard of Reno this time of year. When on the pit crew, we saw 100+ degree days to snow flurry’s. Sometimes all in the same week. Very unpredictable for sure.
You hit the preverbal nail on the head, we need every drop of rain possible. Hope the moisture and low temps help with the fires. The threat of evacuation twice in a one year span is ridiculous.

Sure they are! Ever own a carbon or vintage cub?

I work on and fly several freinds 18's (cc, jvrn, & pipr (husky... cubish) etc) plenty of experience here. For durability and longevity I'd roll with airframes ak Javon Dakota and piper over cc. Just a personal perspective from maintenance and off airport opps. The cc is probably sweeter to fly than all of them for sure, and the build outs are certainly gorgeous, but when you chase weight that aggressively in design you make trade offs.

A couple of local ak flyer buds mentioned this as well. CC puts out awesome stuff ..... at a premium. For my cashish I'll take a 993 AND a tired piper sc double the fun for 1/2 the money.

Oh... and ya I know huskies are not Cubs I only included them in the comparison as an example of extreme durability and utility. Who wouldn't want that toughness and the extra speed? Still stupid pricy though and they aren't as sweet to fly as any 18.

This, from an acquaintance and parts supplier of mine, Steve of pierce aero ...

"Nose to tail small differences. FX3s weight in the mid 1100 lbs. The fuselage is lighter because of tube sizes and the top longeron concept, wings are lighter, ailerons and flaps are lighter, carbon fiber cowl is way lighter as is the oil cooler, baffles, torque tube, sticks, brake cylinders, plastic fuel lines etc. It is all a compromise. Some of those compromises didn't work out like using light fabric. I have maintained some SS Carbon Cubs and currently maintain a few EX/FX2s and several FX3s. Have a groundlopped FX3 in the shop now, changed the wing, gear and elevator. The performance and the control harmony in the EX/FX2 and 3 is amazing to me. I really like the perfomance and the ailerons. Not selling my Super Cub, house and hangar so I can buy one but glad there are people with that kind of disposable income.

To each his own. If you're fortunate enough to have one, bully for you! Party on and fly it like you stole it

Looks like G loc to me.

Jolly Amaranto 09-19-2022 06:06 AM

Do those guys in racing jets even wear G suits? Looks like he pulled too many Gs and then just lost it.

Possible I suppose, thing is he had control enough to roll out of the pack, looked like he was attempting to pull up as per malfunction /race procedure. Then it rolled left and held the attitude all the way in.

I wonder if it was possible he shucked some turbine parts into flight controls? Not much left to Investigate in any case.

I don't think so
Blue Angels never do, they say the inflation of the suit could interfere with their precision steering..
they rest their arms on thigs to have steady base for arms on flight stick, inflating stuit would move their arms..
This air racing seems like a similar thing, high speed ,close proximity..

Don't know about those L39 trainers or other racing jets.. suspect they don't because extra weight and cost involved..

Either way , a G suit is not the end of all means, still need proper G resistance straining and breathing.

Dunno anyones guess, To me it looked like they were in a bank, pulling, and he just stopped pulling and augered in. as you would with loss of pilot?

Maybe other video has better picture
I think if mechanical, there would be something on the radio , i think they have an open channel

if not mechanical, no transmission, I think it would be G loc?

https://youtu.be/u-43I50DqQM?t=38

other angle, defo looks like he was pulling, did not roll out and just augered which to me looks limp at the controls

Edit it was an L29, I doubt those have G suit equipment, but they are rated +8-4 G, so they are very capable of high G

rsrguy 09-19-2022 08:44 AM

L39 (Aaron's was a 29)say they pull 8.5 around that course... so g loc sounds like the obvious reason.

svandamme 09-19-2022 09:05 AM

they are fine with the 8.5 its on short pulls, they know its coming when they pull at the bends
But I think he got out of shape, had to evade another plane, and maybe he pulled more to try and stay in the race, and/or maybe somehow mismanaged his G strain in the avoidance maneuver

RNajarian 09-19-2022 10:01 AM

My pal was there last week for the races. He saw the accident. I’ll ask him if he has heard anything.

On the bright side his vintage 1946 Swift took the Garber trophy.
