Well, we rented a place north of Nags Head Sept. 16-23. It's one house off the beach.
We are SO looking forward to it. We need to get out of here and rest. Retirement is wearing us both out.

^^^ Should be perfect....explore both north & south at a leisurely pace...or not . Nags Head used to be the surfing mecca for college buddies when a storm played with waves....I'd hafta leave now .

Enjoy!

Hey, we are there that same week. We will be way south of you, but if you wanna grab a lunch or dinner or something, Im all ears .. Ill keep my drama to a minimum
I think you will really enjoy the island . The Corolla lighthouse is 30 minutes north of you, and is really cool if you are into that kind of thing . If you find yourself travelling south to check out the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, you will be 10 minutes from us .
Enjoy your trip .

Duck and Corolla on OBX if you want to be near some shops and restaurants. Rodanthe to the south on OBX if you want to feel far from such things. OBX is more about renting entire homes than it is hotels. Lots of 4k sf + 3 story 7 bedroom type joints with pools and game rooms.

Va Beach is, IMHO, not a very nice place. Although if there you can slip over to Jamestown & Busch Gardens.

Va eastern shore (n of CBBT) is a wasteland but has some small towns that will give you a very separated from society vibe. We fish down that way several times a year and enjoy it. Chincoteague to the north is probably the most developed option.

Remember to bag your tires if you hit the 4x4 beach and want to go look at the wild horses! A place I like to eat is Aqua Restaurant in Duck. It's on the sound side and has a nice outdoor eating area. If you're into a kayak tour, I really enjoyed Corolla Kayak tours. It's pretty slow paced and you kayak around the sound side and get a bit of history about the area.

If you are listening Patrick, Ocracoke island is a great day trip . Have to take a car ferry across the inlet, about a 45 minute ride. We always do a dinner down there, and almost always are met with a beautiful sunset on the ferry coming back from dinner.
Just a quaint little island with some smaller shops, and eateries . We got married on the island 3 years ago .. Rent a golf cart and cruise around for the day . It's a unique place .

All need do is drive about 3 to 4 miles north of the town on Ocrakoke and you will have a beach all to yourself. Did the walk from the ferry back to town, 12 miles or so, but a great half day adventure

If you're into this sort of thing, the Elizabethan Gardens is a nice place to visit too. It's really not my thing but it was a nice place. I personally haven't gone to Ocracoke but my nephew and his wife go and really enjoy it.

If you want to break up the drive, I've got extra bedrooms in Charlottesville-good diversion, lots of scenery and history here.

If you have a free evening, check out the "Lost Colony" play on Ocracoke. Americas longest running outdoor theatre production.

Let me look at a map. We will definitely be taking two days to get down there. Hectic is the last thing we need.

I remember when I first started my business that I took a call from a potential client in Roanoke. I could not understand what he was saying. I asked him to spell it. "Ar-a, Oh-a, Ay-a, ..." I finally figured it out.

Yup! I think the Elizabethan Gardens are close to where they do the Lost Colony outdoor play.

BTW Patrick, my wife's suggestion was "grab a margarita and sit your ass on the beach" Not a bad suggestion at all. I'm a kite guy. I have two different stunt kits that I normally bring and fly in the morning or evening.

That's pretty much what we'll do. As business owners we have always had to work hard and be "on" all the time and we haven't been able to break that habit since we retired. We're kinda beginning to accept that it's in our DNA. For us, "getting away" still means a going somewhere for a few days of low to no energy activities. We like to joke that we've been everywhere and we've seen nothing. It's a common refrain for business travelers. we're trying to change - really.
