How bad can an airline as Spirit get? Pilot and wife OD on fentanyl

Spirit ranks as one of the worst airlines and now we learn a recreational drug using pilot along with his wife overdosed. What kind of a bobo screening system does this airline have?

2015 America's worst airline for customer satisfaction is... - Apr. 20, 2015

Call me out but this guy was an azzhat. How in the hell does one even contemplate any sort of recreational drug use? Worse, by having a family AND the responsibility for flying others!

Have you seen the movie "Flight" starring Denzel Washington?
It really makes you wonder what the condition of the flight crew is when flying.
I use Spirit out of Det at least 8 times a year. It really is a no-frills airline. But the ticket cost from DTW to Ft Laud is very low (hardly ever pay more than $250 RT/pp)
No free food or drinks...have to listen to their CC spiel during the flight.
I read they are the fastest growing airline... the last few times at FLL it looks like most of their planes are newer than most others.

Flight is a stupid movie as accurate as Star Wars.

That pilot and wife that offed themselves did a service to humanity by removing himself from the planet.

There are drug addicted people in every walk of life. Attorneys, pilots, physicians, truckers, train operators, dentists...on and on. I'd imagine their distribution approaches the same as the general population.

This couple obviously had some deep issues. I cannot imagine the grief of the children and of the grandparents.

I don't think this country has focused enough on what ails us - and it's not getting any better. Recreational drug use sounds so benign - the truth is, taking drugs (or alcohol) to excess is an escape - a way to cope. As a society we are quick to judge/arrest/punish/ban when (I think) we fail to look at the root causes: something is afflicting a society that is relatively wealthy and that has (historically) a lot of leisure time - and the ack of an answer is killing us.

Me: I think, in the post-God era, it's a lack of purpose, and the lack of any reliance on a higher power.

My $.02 anyways.

God bless the deceased, and may He look after those poor poor children.

That Fentanyl is some good schiess. I think there was a batch of heropin laced with it going around a few years back. People were dropping like flies . An old buddy died from it. Local cop said he walked in the door at the scene, and he had an unlit cigarette in one hand, with the needle still stuck in his other arm arm. It killed him that fast.
His wife told the police that when he heard about this super powerful batch of smack, that he sought it ought.
Tin foil hat on here, but one has to wonder if these drugs are here for a reason.
Sorry for the spelling, I spilled iced tea on my keyboard, sticky keys ...

Good for those who've battled such dependency or habit, but thats not what I'm concerned of. And the society acceptance?

I agree the laws have completely failed. Starts at the source and suppliers. Needed is rapid cleansing by capital punishment. Done, over, no more.

Then we have the users. I can see a variance in handling cases but if ones profession is such critically connected to the well being and safety of others, 'chooses' to 'depend' on these 'methods for coping', I'm all for locking them up for life. Done, over, no mercy.

It might take two or three generations to purge it from the humans brain that this is not acceptable, period.

Without going to PARF, this is nothing to do about some god. I do have empathy but have zero pity to this azzhat parent, AND commercial pilot.

Someones god didn't save anyone here nor came to the rescue with an antidote. To say its sad, etc. is being weak. Rather the reaction should be a fighting outrage on many fronts.

If drugs and booze is really this prevalent at Spirit or any other airlines they've failed.

Good thing there was no crash with melting burning alive humans due to a whacked out on drugs pilot. How could they fail to find out of his bad habit? Or perhaps the actually did know! One case such as this is too many.

I totally agree with this, we have created a generation without morals and values and then we wonder why there are mass murders and rampant drug use.

The grumpy old man is strong in this thread. Moral compass ... give me a break. Man has been taking drugs since he climbed out of the trees. Some of the most problematic opioid infested areas are in the Bible Belt - drinking may be down but pain killers aren't.

This still beats that German pilot who decided to just fly the whole plane into the the French Alps, with a couple hundred of people on board.

Read this, goofy in parts but so f'ing sobering:

https://www.firstthings.com/article/2017/04/american-carnage

China manufactures a good deal of the fentanyl that comes to the U.S., one of those unanticipated consequences of globalization. The dealers responsible for cutting it by a factor of fifty are unlikely to be trained pharmacists. The cutting lab may consist of one teenager flown up from the Dominican Republic alone in a room with a Cuisinart and a box of starch or paracetamol. It takes considerable skill to distribute the chemicals evenly throughout a package of drugs. Since a shot of heroin involves only the tiniest little pinch of the substance, you might tap into a part of the baggie that is all cutting agent, no drug—in which case you won’t get high. On the other hand, you could get a fentanyl-intensive pinch—in which case you will be found dead soon thereafter with the needle still sticking out of your arm. This is why fentanyl-linked deaths are, in some states, multiplying year on year. The federal CDC has lagged in reporting in recent years, but we can get a hint of the nationwide toll by looking at fentanyl deaths state by state. In Maryland, the first six months of 2015 saw 121 fentanyl deaths. In the first six months of 2016, the figure rose to 446.

This is serious and omnipresent.

"(Mother-in-law) Casey told officers her daughter had been “hooked on drugs” on and off for about seven years. Casey suspected her daughter was high when talking with her that day, a report said."

Brian Hayle, Courtney Hayle found dead in apparent fentanyl overdose, police say - CBS News

It's so sad she couldn't ever get clean. Her previous husband died of an overdose at 27.

"I've seen the needle and the damage done, a little part of it in everyone, but every junkie's like a setting sun..."

Explaining would take the thread to PARF-land.

It is better here.

Excellent read.

In summary, the laws, medical professions and liberal mindset have massively failed.
