Back to my roots... and broken no bones

I think the last time I came out of MX racing retirement I was about 34 or 35. 1st race went well... couple weeks later in next race I smoked my ankle and ended up on crutches.

Fast forward to last night 53 yrs old.... Local county fair hosted a MX race and I decided to give it a go in the 50+ vet class. Other than my yard, I had not ridden my "antique" 2003 Honda CR250 two stroke on dirt in over two years.

First moto last night was awful and got 5th out of 7 bikes. Second moto I redeemed myself and nearly pulled the holeshot against mostly modern 450 4 strokes ridden by guys who still actively race. Ended up finishing 2nd which got me 2nd overall.

Fair track was small and all stop/go. My arms pumped within two laps and I was huffing and puffing after each moto..... I NEED TO GET IN BETTER SHAPE! My cardio is just plain awful!

Thankfully no injuries so my wife won't need to kill me.

Surprisingly I am not sore at all this morning.... I think my morning situps/pushups/pullups/kneebends over the last couple years have gotten my muscular fitness in check.... Just need to start doing the dreaded cardio stuff for which I am SEVERELY lacking.

What i was thinking is that riding a bike at speed requires using muscles we don't normally use.
In your case maybe not, but I know if I tried racing again it'd probably kill me.

Awesome!!!!

I still have my 2001 CR250R set up for trail riding. It needs some love though since I’ve primary moved to my XP1000 Razr on the trails now.

"Hardware" apparently is a bit different nowadays. At least it won't corrode like all my hardware from "back in the day".

Speaking of "back in the day" here is an oldie from about 1990 in the parking lot pits at the Pontiac Silverdome supercross race. My 1990 Honda CR250.

Ha! I love it - sounds like my wife - "if you hurt yourself I'm gonna kill ya!!"

Congrats. Not many guys your (our) age would even consider such a thing. And good on you for riding the two smoker - to me, that smells defines "motocross".

The smells, the sounds of 2 strokes are MX. I understand letting the 4 strokes in, but those were always more of an Enduro or Hare Scramble with the TT500s and similar bikes.

I helped on the pit crew for one of the desert racers in SoCal. He had a 500cc 2 stroke Kawasaki and that stupid thing would throw a rooster tail at 120.

While riding my Kawasaki KLR 250 enduro around my farm, our 70# dog ran out in front of me (trying to bite the moving tire). I saved his life but threatened mine by taking a big spill. I remember going over the handlebars, and hitting the ground with my chin, and chest at the same time. I was able to pick the bike back up, kickstart it again, and ride home to put it away in the barn.

I had a bruised chin, and 5 broken ribs which I felt every time I breathed for the next few weeks...no pain killers for me !

No way in Hell. My son & his friends tried to talk me into racing DH MTB in the over 50 cat.. Nice bike, MX over 50 would be tough, good job on the 2nd place. I'll stick to the mountains. I took this Tuesday with my Son in Capital Forest.

Kind of embarassing in regard to how slow I rode, but here is the video.
