I went through a couple of rounds of replacements from our hosts in the first five or six years of owning my SC. Still have some shinny new looking ones in there, but now use a stick to hold the hood up.

Threads like this are interesting to me; I've never had much problem w Porsche hood struts or any other lift struts. They wear out, you replace them. Buy Stabilus from a reputable source and you should be able to warrantee them if they wear out prematurely and get a new set for free.
Obviously ask what the warranty period is when you buy them and keep the receipt in the glove box or something.
