"The Office" US version...does it get funnier?

We've never watched it, and so we've just started going through it via streaming.

This was supposed to be one of the great modern sitcoms...but we don't exactly find it funny. It's actually kinda mean. We don't mind crude, but this isn't crude, it makes us wince. Over the past 2 or 3 years we've burned through Parks and Rec (loved it), 30Rock (loved it), Kimmy Schmidt (loved it), Good Place (loved it), Bobs Burgers (loved it), Futurama (loved it), Rick and Morty (loved it)...now we're trying The Office...don't love it.

Does it change tone soon? 3 episodes in...

Roswell 10-01-2019 07:40 AM

No. if anything it only gets worse. Just one man's opinion.

masraum 10-01-2019 07:45 AM

We love, love, love Futurama.

We've been really surprised at how good the Good Place has been and continues to be with each season.

I saw an episode of Parks and Recreation on a plane once and it didn't resonate with me, but I haven't tried to just sit and watch it.

I've seen some small excerpts of the Office on youtube, and didn't really think it seemed that funny to me.

I have no experience with the others that you mentioned.

I've learned that lots of those shows are just kinda interesting if you stumble into them, but actually going from step 1 and watching them evolve makes they spectacular. Oh, Brooklyn 99 as well.

Old sitcoms basically encapsulated every store within 23 minutes, but these new ones have season or seasonS long character arcs as well.

Tervuren 10-01-2019 08:11 AM

I think it appeals to the kind of people who have to deal with what is in the content.

Nope, doesn't get better IMO. Too slow, drags out gags. Tries way too hard to imitate Bob Newhart. No one can do Bob Newhart except Bob Newhart.
And yes, he's still alive :)

The only reason I could come up with to invest more than a few minutes in watching the office was seeing Darlene Madison (Jenna Fischer).

no, it stays about like that

If you like Futurama, check out Disenchantment

porsche930dude 10-01-2019 09:16 AM

There was a show on adult swim that was like futurama it was good but i cant seem to find any info on it. I used to watch the office because it was the only thing on tv. The only show i followed when it was on was "Dead like me" I liked it

Steve Carlton 10-01-2019 09:21 AM

I think Modern Family is great.

My daughter and son in law watch it, but I just don't get it.

Or Two and a Half Men, or Big Bang Theory.

Ronbo 10-01-2019 10:13 AM

I thought the BBC version of The Office was far better than the US counterpart, plus the British version has a fantastic ending.

I would consider that, except that I hate British TV and everything it stands for.

Wait...did I just forget the green text?

No, no I didn't.

RedBaron 10-01-2019 11:26 AM

First two seasons are a bit cruel. After that it gets better.

Hate British TV and everything it stands for? What?
Justify please, , if you have the intellectual capacity to so do.

Was it quite a bit more adult?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0315081/

This is the original short that was made and put on the Internet. Several years later, it was made into a show that was on Adult Swim.

Big Bang is great, at least the first several seasons. I think we only saw the first 8 or 9 seasons.

I almost said that I hate everything British, but then i realized that the only thing I hate about the people is that they make and watch the TV shows...I don't really hate everything about them. Just the TV part. And the food. And the weather. And the traffic. And the accents. And the need to be so damned British. :D

Likely explains why you don’t like The Office. It incorporates a lot of British humor devices.

Agreed, it’s more of a cringe worthy show

rwest 10-01-2019 03:37 PM

Try “Arrested Development”, “The League” or “Letterkenny.”

It takes time to embrace the characters. First time I saw Seinfeld I was turned off.

Then the cringe worthy stuff finally lands. See 45 seconds in.

British TV too sophisticated for you obviously..
The weather we can't control, but we at least don't have your hurricanes, and tornadoes.
British food is a heck of a lot healthier than US food, chlorinated chickens et al.

pavulon 10-02-2019 02:46 AM

The Office was all about cringe-moment humor. Some people find being a bit uncomfortable funny, some don't.

kanadary 10-02-2019 03:54 AM

My daughter is hooked on the office, parks and rec, 30 rock, scrubs, new girl . I though the office was pretty good until Steve Carell left, then it went down hill. The show does get better when that start to develop the characters more.

Tobra 10-02-2019 04:18 AM

It did not make me feel uncomfortable, it just was not very funny. It is populated by funny people, funny extended cameos, Kathy Bates for example. It was much less than the sum of its parts.

LEAKYSEALS951 10-02-2019 04:58 AM

Warren Buffett was a brief (but good) cameo, when he interviewed for a position to replace Michael Scott.

This got me googling, and stumbled across a hidden skit, which evidently Warren only played for employees at BH employee meeting. I'd like to see it. Oh well....

Yup. It jumped the shark when Carell left and Ed Helms came on board. For some reason they felt the need to incorporate Helms' song and dance routines into about every episode  The original British version with Ricky Gervais was hilarious too, but only went 2 seasons.

dennis in se pa 10-02-2019 05:36 AM

I cannot see the interest in the 'Office' or 'Seinfeld'. I forced myself to watch a few shows of both, but I cannot watch anymore. Just basically stupid TV.

dennis in se pa 10-02-2019 08:41 AM

" I hate British TV " :) how come the brits all seems to have a speech impediment? :)

I like The Office, but I hate Michael Scott's character the first several seasons.

In the first season:

Michael Scott is the incompetent, overbeating boss.
Jim is the slacker 20-something with no ambition in life who is quietly in love with Pam.
Pam is the slacker 20-something with no ambition in life who is in an unhappy relationship.
Dwight is the overbearing coworker

By the end of the Last Season:
Michael is gone.
Jim is the hyper-focused careerist.
Pam is in a happy marriage but afraid of change.
Dwight is the hyper-competent manager.

I think the Michael character gets better with the third season on. Also, as Creed, Angela, Oscar, etc. play larger parts, the show gets funnier.

I think it's also interesting the actor who played Creed Bratton was a member of the Grass Roots.

That actor's name is.....Creed Bratton.

He played a fictionalized version of himself.

I would have thought “hate” was reserved for ISIS or murderers of your friends and family but if you want to paint a whole nation with hate then so be it. You’ve no love for Aston Martins and McClarens? Fleabag and James Bond? Belstaff and Church shoes? Rolling Stones and Radiohead? Marco Pierre White? Ramsey? Harry Potter? Brexit might be an indication that we can be as dumb as Americans but surely you can find a little love for us Brits? Ever been there?
