I have had the pleasure of owning a 74 911 S Targa , 87 944S , 75 914 GT clone , 83 911SC and now my 02 Boxster S . All were fun cars and each had a unique personality . But out of all of them the most enjoyable is my current S . Up here in the GA. mountains it is the most fun in the twisties that mid engine layout is tough to beat . Add to that modern safety features , comfortable interior and HVAC , fantastic brakes and the ability to drop the top in seconds it is a lot of bang for the buck . So for me if I had to choose between 911 and Cayman the Cayman wins .

It's funny, my last 20 years of cars have been '88 911 targa, '97 miata, '04 miata and now '08 Boxster. The funny thing is that I'm not really interested in having a convertible. I think the top of the boxster comes down <5 times per year most years. The miatas may have been more (<30) due to being easier and me having a different commute. The targa was probably similar to the miatas for the same reason. I'd have happily bought a Cayman if I'd found the right one. I'd have also bought a 911 coupe if I'd found the right one. |
I drove a 16 Cayman yesterday, really impressed. Took a bit to get the seat setup right but it was very comfortable, great visibility, plenty of power for a DD, beautiful. But, 20's ride hard for the roads here, more exhaust note than expected (sample size of 1, stock exhaust?) and fitting my fat hump over the sill might get old. I know I would wear out the outside bolster pretty quickly. Only gripe about the drive was the pdk. I'm sure you get used to it, but initial impressive is 2 fold. It was great when driving aggressively, shifts so fast and seemed to always be in the right gear. But, poking along in traffic it shifted all the time, maybe it didnt really matter but it seemed to hunt a lot at partial throttle. Again, might not matter, it just stood out as a bit annoying.
I havent driven a modern 911 in a while so I need to get a back in one soon to compare boring DD things like seating position, access... |

I do exactly as "look 171" does, in that I start the car and immediately press the Sport button, which changes the throttle maps, transmission maps, and suspension settings. I then deselect the PASM to put the suspension back into a more comfortable mode, and I'm set. The Normal mode is horrible as far as the transmission maps are concerned. It's primary focus when you are on a normal light throttle is to upshift to the highest gear possible for mileage purposes - it actually gets to 7th gear by 47 mph (!). Then, after much too long of a delay, it decides to downshift, but now you've got too much throttle in, and she takes off more than maybe I originally intended. Super annoying. Sport mode does none of that. It's in the right gear all the time, and downshifts at the merest push of the throttle. Normal mode IS basically fine if you use the paddles though. The shifts are a little soft for my liking, but at least I'm always in the gear I want to be in. Sport or Sport Plus WITH the paddles is the most fun, though. Especially Sport Plus. ;) |
