XP 82 airplane restoration
Think restoring a car is difficult? This boggles my mind... Sent to me by a friend, thought I'd pass it on.

At the local Air Force Base, Tinker AFB, they do a lot of aircraft refurbishment. Of course they have access to the Air Force budget, and lots of resources. Back in the "good ol days" Tinker allowed our local Porsche club region to use one of the ramps to run our autocross. They would let us use the restrooms in one of the hangars where they had a B-52 stripped to a bare tub. Every bit of it was checked for corrosion, and refurbished to better than new. As I remember that last new B-52 was built in 1963. All of them in service are older than the pilots flying them. Some B-52s were flown by three generations of a family. Imagine flying the very same airplane yout grandfather flew.
Tinker keep them flying and much updated from the originals. It really is astonishing to see a very large airplane taken apart 100% and completely refurbished and updated. The B-52 may well be in active duty front line weapon for the US Military 100 years after the first ones flew. It is astonishing what private citizens funded with their own sweat and hard work can do to keep a cool aircraft like the XP-82 flying.

What is the point of two pilots? Is one a gunner/bomber and the other a pilot or something? I've always thought this was a strange bird!

There is a F-82 at the Air Force museum in Dayton.
Sure is a unique bird.

Wonder how this could stack up against a P38 or a Tiger Cat in terms of payload capacity, speed, handling, armament
Cool looking but perhaps redundant when compared to the other two successful planes

As long as we're discussing P-51 mutations...

The USAF has been seriously considering a light attack aircraft for the last few years - not sure if they'll ever actually select one and put it into production. Many people agree this is what the Air Force needs (it would compliment the A-10, not replace it). One of the major contractors in the middle east, discussing aerial support for troops on the ground a couple of years ago, stated: "we need Skyraiders" referring to the A-1 Skyraider used in the '50 and '60s. The Piper Enforcer (turbine Mustang, above), would have been a great choice at the time (back in the '80s) but the AF nixed the idea. One of the (lame) reasons was that the AF had no ability for tail wheel training. That cold have easily been handled by a private contractor. It will never happen but it would be great if the Enforcer was put into production as a much needed light attack aircraft today.

An attack plane needs two engines.

An attack plane should have big, sharp teeth painted on the cowl.
