I watched a documentary today about FDR and his speech after the attack. His advisors/admin wanted a long, fiery speech, but FDR stuck to his guns and kept it short. The first sentence is unforgettable.

We went to Pearl Harbor about 12 years ago. It was very moving to be at the Arizona memorial.

Baz and Jim, thanks for the stories.

I wonder what post-boomers think about it. My dad fought in the Philippines and didn’t much want to talk about it. We understood from the few words he said that it was something so dark and bad it was almost unspeakable, but was just and had to be done. I wonder what people who never got that second hand impression from men who experienced it feel about it.

Most likely the last USS Arizona crew member to be interred on his ship. Starts at about 52 minutes in.

From the last time I was over that way... and thank you to all who sacrificed so much. You are not forgotten. At least not by this guy.

Almost 80 years later and there is still fuel oil leaking into the harbor from the Arizona. It wasn’t really all that long ago and we must be sure to never, ever forget the lessons of that day.

Thanks to all who served and supported.

We were living in Hawaii in Wiapahu which overlooks Pearl Harbor back when they were filming the movie Tora Tora Tora. We could sit on our porch and watch the Zeros flying over, and see the explosions. It was cool. It struck me back then that it was cool to see the filming, and KNOW for a fact the zeros were flown by the American pilots, and they had no real bombs or bullets. I can't even imagine the terror of the civilians and military personnel with zeros strafing and bombing anything that moved.

My dad was an Air Force officer and worked at PACAF headquarters. They still have bullet holes in the front of the building, and Americans were killed in that building, and all over the islands, not just Pearl Harbor. The holes are left just to remind anyone going in to the building, we were attacked once because we are not really watching and we were not ready. We learned a hard lesson.

Interesting how you can see the shock waves from the explosions in that photo.

Something interesting about Lauren Bruner's internment in the Arizona last week. Army divers use vintage WW2 Mark 5 diving suits to place his urn in the gun turret.
