Also this for heavy beat up hands, I also keep Berts Bee's Hand Salve around when it's not as bad, those are the two go-to's I've used for years.

Go with these and you can't go wrong.

Wow lots of suggestions thanks . My wife is currently using the Okeefe's with minimal results. Also using the liquid band aid . We have well water so no harsh chemicals. Use Ivory soap exclusively . Her grandmother had the same issue maybe hereditary ? I think we'll look into a Burt's bees product next .

I suffered from the same thing. I work in warm dusty environments, and when it's cold weather my fingers etc. get splits that bleed. A chemist suggested scrubbing the hands gently, but for an extended period with a pumice stone, then coating the hands with a product called Silic 15. After applying, put on some surgical type gloves for an hour, then remove the gloves and let the cream dry by itself. I have not suffered the dreaded bleeding cracks for four years.

I wear disposable gloves in the kitchen to prevent washing my hands as much.

+1
The skin isn’t losing oil, it’s lost water. Soak in warm water to rehydrate. Then the oil based stuff is good to preserve the skin’s hydration.

Bingo! Evidently, not sold for cow chapped & sore teats alone anymore...thus the name. Medicated, so staves off infection as well as heals. Warning..your wife may not like the odor, but the stuff works. Check your local farm supply store...

My local farm/ranch supply store charges $20 for the regular sized can that I can buy at the Costco pharmacy behind the counter for $5.xx.

I've used this stuff. Works great.

I have severe eczema on my hands. She needs a barrier cream not a lotion. When washing her hands don't use really hot water and pat dry, don't rub. There are a couple options that work for me.

AmLactin
CeraVe

Vaseline at night with gloves.

If it gets too bad she may need to see a dermatologist. They have access to other options. Good luck.

PorscheGAL 12-27-2019 04:03 AM

Also, Moroccanoil has a scrub that is oil based. I find it helpful to put this on my hands, rinse and then put on my barrier cream

T77911S 12-27-2019 04:13 AM

don't bother with hand cream

use foot cream.
my hands get cracked very bad, more from working.
I will use one of those foot files on my hands then foot cream at night.
rub it on her feet then use excess on the hands.

one other thing that helps is cuticle oil. I have a friend that owns a nail salon. sometimes I will give her a foot massage with cuticle oil. that helps them too. (wife does not like that too much).

right now my hands look and feel "normal".

Haven't found anything that beats this stuff:

Aveeno Eczema care works well for me.

I sand down the thickness of the skin around a crack to give it a better chance of healing.
Reducing the thickness of the skin really seems to help. You can remove your fingerprints at the same time...
I also have a can of bag balm and will put some on and cover with gloves for a while.

This is what does my wife in. She washes her hands, dishes, showers, etc with scalding hot water (at least it seems so to this delicate flower).

As pointed out, when you put on lotion/emollient matters. Right after bathing/washing hands.

There is stuff you can get through medical supply vendors that you apply a few times a day, and it protects the skin, stuff I have seen is a foam.

faverymi 12-27-2019 01:46 PM

When it gets so bad put whatever product you like inside exam gloves.

Wear the gloves overnight. The next morning you'll have baby's butt hands.

I'll give you 💯 rehydration and last for a while.

Maintain with your product of choice

My dad used to get such dry hands in the winter that they'd crack and bleed. He used to put Lanolin on his hands and then put his hands in jersey gloves at night before he went to bed. I have used Corn Huskers lotion but my dry hands problem isn't as sever as my dad's was.

rfuerst911sc 12-27-2019 04:32 PM

Sorry I haven't replied we lost our internet for several days it just came back up . So many suggestions thank you . I guess I we try one product and keep going until we find one that works

During the winter here in Columbus, they crank up the chemicals in the water during the winter, and my skin drys out terribly. Nothing that lotion can't fix, but it pretty dramatic when they make the change.

Try Corn Huskers lotion.

I did not read all of the responses but saw some good advice wrt lotions. I've had dry skin all my life, had eczema as a kid. Family trait, we all have fair, dry skin. Some people have lots of natural oils in their skin, I've always envied those people unless it goes overboard, which is just as bad as dry skin, I guess(?)

HD touches on an important point, the quality of the water coming out of your pipes at home. I worked in the water treatment business many years ago and learned a lot about the pitfalls of hard water and chlorine on skin and hair, etc.

If you are lucky enough to live in a place w great municipal water, like Seattle or NYC, (believe it or not), your dry skin would be 10x better before you even put on any lotion, just from the water. The water in L.A. is pretty hard but it actually varies quite a bit even within the city and county, depending on where your supply comes from. Desert places like Vegas and Phoenix probably have terrible water, I'm imagining but don't know for a fact.

Anyhow, the best solution if you own a house in a place w bad water is a good water softener w other filters in the system, such as for copper and chlorine in shower water. I live in an apartment most of the time in a really old building, (1920s), and use a filter that fits on the shower pipe. Got it on Amazon and it's a big improvement from using nothing...not much softening but great chlorine filter, etc. Might be the placebo effect but it seems really noticeable to me from the used up one it replaced.

I bought this one based on reviews, happy w it:
