Where are all the stainless steel toolboxes?

A few years back I needed a weird socket for a particular task. I knew the local store would never have what I needed. I called Snap-On and found out where a truck was going to be and met him there.

I bought my craftsman boxes from a snap-on truck, he took them as trade, and wanted to dump them. Most of my metric craftsman sockets also.

The Harbor Freight cabinets seem like good value, but I've never loaded on up and tried the drawers.

A good quality cabinet drawer can be opened with one finger from one side of the drawer even when it's full. That's the Snap-On standard.

I would be leery of the cheap stainless cabinets, they probably don't have enough nickel in the material to prevent rusting. And they are likely very thin...

Have you looked on your local Craigslist - just to compare what you could get used?

I looked yesterday at the Daytona CL and saw several for under $200 that looked pretty nice.

It's not always apples to apples but as Mick says.....

The newer HF boxes are very nice for the money. At the shop where I used to work, the new guys bought new snap on boxes. The owner, bought the repo'd boxes that the snap on guy took back from the new guys that got out of the biz in 6-12 months. Almost new boxes for half price. I wasn't a mechanic but I did learn something from those transactions.

Just tried that one finger thing on my Craftsman ball bearing/griplatch drawers...they pass. Happy that I bought Craftsman tools/rollaway when it was all USA made..

Dunno what I'd do if buying new today. But not really a consideration...got too damned old to want to do it yourself wrench these days. Dealership service on both Cindy's Camrey and my Mustang these days. Rarely open the rollaway.

I have a Hazet tool chest. The one finger opening thing works ok, but it doesn't have the self-closing feature that my Craftsman tool chest has. But the level of finish is good enough to make the Hazet cabinet go in my office as furniture.

I can't find ANYTHING on sale right now. You used to be able to find Hazet, Stahlwille, and Gedore on sale all the time. Now, nothing. And I kick myself for not buying the Kubota tool cabinet at Costco when they had it.

My Craftsman box has steel slides and no bearings, My HF boxes have ball bearing rollers, and I have seen guys stand inside of open drawers. Very high quality stuff that rivals Snap On or similar boxes for a fraction of the price.
