I think the damage to the studs came from someone with a torch removing the nuts the hard way.

I didnt get the story but maybe because they didnt use hubcentric spacers or perhaps the wrong lug nuts. If they used the conical seat ones on steel wheels that could easily loosen up. The damage is no doubt from loose wheels rolling around.

Good point. I'm guessing that damage would probably be an even circle around the outside.

I first saw big metal gouges but only on one side of the stud. Initially I thought there was sudden trauma or strike on just that one side like the car had been dropped without tightening the lugs. But the thing is the gouge damage is not random and not equal. A chisel of some type was probably used to remove the old lug nuts would be my best guess. idk
