I worked with an old black man named Benny in Alabama at my first job. Benny rolled his own cigarettes, and could do it with just one hand. He made perfect "joints" of tobacco. I told one of my friends at school about his skills. The "hired" him to roll joints at their party and his pay was all the free tokes he could take. He rolled joints all night. He even taught them how to improve their technique. He said it was the best party of white kids he ever went to.

I did not attend as I hate the stink of stink weed.

Reeves was the bass player until fired in 1970? He ended up in a Mexican jail after getting caught smuggling pot into the US I believe in 1977 Niel Young was the only guy still friendly with him and bailed him out for 25K. During the 7 months Reeves was imprisoned he fell behind on property payments and we snapped up his 7 acre mountain property in foreclosure in 78. Still enjoying it to this day

Holy crap, that is a great story!
Very cool!

Baz 02-27-2021 07:52 AM

Youse guys are forgetting to post a random pic......

But I agree......great story, Greg! Reeves was only 16 when he joined the band, which I find very cool, as well.

I thought the machine was the coolest thing when I was a little kid.

Me too!
I still have the one my parents had. I was fascinated by it and played with it as a kid. Until I was 5 my parents had a small, country grocery store. They sold loose tobacco and kept the roller in the store so patrons could roll a few smokes.

I looked up some info on Reeves. Quite a musical history. Scouted by motown at age 12, played bass on "cloud nine" for the temptations, "it's like you never left" for Dave mason. Played with Rick James (who introduced him to Niel Young), Diana Ross, Duane Allman, Nils Lofgren, David Geffen, Clive Davis, Eric Clapton.
Steven Stills wanted him gone from CSN&Y. Accusing him of being some kind of American indian witch doctor!?

Check out the 2018 "Echo in the Canyon" Documentary narrated by Jakob Dylan

Its a look at the roots of the historic music scene in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon featuring the music of iconic groups such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas and the Papas. Other musicians not mentioned in the documentary who were living in Laurel Canyon at the time include Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Linda Ronstadt. As well, members of the Monkees are briefly mentioned.

Watched it a few times. Steven Stills come off as a fried up hippie and Crosby comes off as an A-hole.

Good documentary. Highly recommended.

My Grandma. She could cook, play ukulele, guitar and love you to death. Great Lady...

I took this shot with my trusty Kodak box camera in 1964. Big thrill was riding in a convertible Mustang towed on the "track" at the Ford pavilion. Was a long time before I ever saw one on the street.

I don’t remember it, but our family went there also.

I've still got the photos from my Instamatic somewhere in the sands if time. At the Ford pavilion, I was hoping for a Mustang, but we got a T-Bird instead. Still not bad.

My lasting memory was seeing the "Pieta". Not my picture

We went thru on a conveyor belt/people mover as I recall. It was dimly lit and I swear you hear a pin drop as we went thru. It made a real impression on that 13 year old.

Destined to become McGarrett's car in Hawaii Five-O a couple of years later...

McGarrett's Merc Marquis is still here. His body double/stuntman was give the car, and it had a little bit of rust issues years ago. I think it was the same car that was used as John McG's car in the reboot. He was also Magnum's double/stuntman.
