DD 214 is the form for discharge papers (I think for all of the US armed forces).

The guys are looking at the destroyer USS Tracy (DD-214).

I assume it's supposed to be a clever reference to the guys wanting to get out of the military (get their DD214) and the fact that they are "so close and yet so far" from the ship DD-214.

When we got a new roof a couple of years ago, the roofing company offered a discount to veterans…just show them a copy of your DD 214. I did and he took a picture of it with his phone and I got the discount. Only later did I realize that now some roofer is walking around with a picture of my social security number on his phone! Uh-oh.

I'm into photography, although I don't get out and shoot as much as I'd like. I've always thought IR was pretty neat. I remember you posting about your modded camera and several pics previously. I remember as a young guy looking through photography books and seeing the IR images and thinking they were amazing. You've posted some really great IR images.

I am going to drive past the VLA shown above this summer. I want to take the tour if they are having tours then.

Not my car, but my brother's daily driver is a 1952 VW Bug. He does have a stereo in his and he converted it to 12 volts and disk brakes in the front for some stopping power. He tried electronic ignition and it runs better with points and condenser. The challenge is buying new points that are not garbage right from the package.

My 911 does indeed have great AC, power assisted brakes, and central locking and fuel injection and power windows but none of the other modern toys on cars now

An 18 litre (1098 cu in) Ford GAA V8 petrol engine, used in American tanks during the Second World War. It is one of the largest petrol V8s ever made.
This engine produced around 500 hp and mountains of torque, and was used in tanks such as the M4A3 Sherman and the M26 Pershing. It was one of the best Allied tank engines of the war.

So I used to think the "Front Toward Enemy" stamped on Claymore mines was the most morbidly interesting thing written on a piece of equipment...and then I learned about the stamp on Cobalt 60.
"Drop and Run" is now the most morbidly interesting thing I've seen written on something.
For the record, that little thing in the picture is radioactive enough that just over 10 minutes within a meter of it is enough to unalive you.

While not 60-Co, we used these quite a bit for radiography in the field. I think they're more sustainable than Cobalt's ~5y half life. Never happened to us but I guess there's some decent drama if the source pellet gets stuck outside of the pig.

As the hippies are dying off we get less action from protesters here in Los Alamos but I find it hilarious that they'll prattle on about plutonium remaining deadly for tens of thousands of years yet they have no idea of what's on that construction site or well logging truck. I'll take Pu any day - that other stuff will jack you up!

A fun rabbit hole, in the manner of "Drop and Run" is the archaeological/sociological study of how to label nuclear waste so that someone, long after english is forgotten, will know not to mess around there. We do have a few places on the mesa with "don't ever, like ever, dig here" signs where there might be some interesting stuff in the ground. Not, and will not ever be, publicly accessible. Luckily not reactor waste...
