The Allison V-1710 aircraft engine designed and produced by the Allison Engine Company was the only US-developed V-12 liquid-cooled engine to see service during World War II. Versions with a turbocharger gave excellent performance at high altitude in the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning, and turbo-superchargers were fitted to experimental single-engine fighters with similar results.

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/12/28/574044232/how-pirates-of-the-caribbean-hijacked-americas-metric-system

If the United States were more like the rest of the world, a McDonald's Quarter Pounder might be known as the McDonald's 113-Grammer, John Henry's 9-pound hammer would be 4.08 kilograms, and any 800-pound gorillas in the room would likely weigh 362 kilos.

One reason this country never adopted the metric system might be pirates. Here's what happened:

In 1793, the brand new United States of America needed a standard measuring system because the states were using a hodgepodge of systems.

"For example, in New York, they were using Dutch systems, and in New England, they were using English systems," says Keith Martin, of the research library at the National Institute of Standards and Technology...

In 1939, Arthur Rothstein captured a poignant image of a mother and her family living in a shanty at a city dump in Herrin, Illinois. This photograph is a powerful testament to the hardships faced during the Great Depression. The makeshift dwelling, constructed from salvaged materials, reflects the severe economic struggles of the time. The mother, likely worn but resilient, embodies the resilience and determination of families grappling with poverty and displacement.
Rothstein's work, known for its stark realism, aimed to highlight social issues and bring attention to the plight of those suffering under economic strain. This image not only documents the harsh living conditions but also serves as a historical reminder of the era's widespread economic adversity and the enduring human spirit.

I wonder about that image. The dress is way too nice for someone living in a shanty in the dump. Also, tattoos on a mom in 1939?

This is the OmniVision OV6948, the world's smallest camera has just famously entered the Guinness Book of Records, measuring just 0.575 x 0.575 x 0.232mm: it's good for 40,000-pixel color images using an RGB Bayer back-side-illuminating chip.
