Sitting on the side of Battle Mountain is the old company town of Gilman. The now-abandoned town was initially founded in 1886 by miners searching for silver but later became a center of lead and zinc mining.

VVV I know. Glen posts just some amazing pictures and I get curious.

My best friend and I are going to do a lap, a month or so, around the US next year...I keep a running word doc on places he posts that I have not been to.

Find the dog, from today:

A hamburger made from ground beef containing what is derisively referred to as "pink slime," or what the meat industry calls "lean, finely textured beef," right, and one made from pure 85% lean ground beef are displayed in front of uncooked portions of those meats Thursday, March 15, 2012 in Concord, N.H. Under a change announced Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, districts that get food through the government's school lunch program will be allowed to say no to ground beef containing the ammonia-treated filler and choose filler-free meat instead. The low-cost filler is made from fatty meat scraps that are heated to remove most of the fat, then treated with ammonium hydroxide gas to kill bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. These days most of my meat comes direct from farms, whether it be beef, chicken or whatever. I don't think I'm getting much pink slime, but I'm sure I've had it somewhere, some time before.

We modern folks are so squeamish about what we eat. If we only knew what goes on behind the scenes. I have a pretty good idea but it really does not bother me. As long as I don't get sick and it tastes good, I'm OK. I have survived for 70 years so far but still may live to regret what I have spent a lifetime eating.
