I agree. ONCE, back in the 1970s I forgot to tighten the wheels on my 914. I drove a block and was thinking WTF is that noise. I turned right around and started to investigate, and remembered I needed to torque the lug nuts. And they were not super loose, just snug.

That picture of Garlits having his flywheel/clutch explode nearly cost his his life but did start the move to rear engine top fuel cars. I noted now they have enclosed canopies which was tried about 40 years ago but I forget who?

An original that was prettied up just a little by my gunsmith/tutor who gave up on his cancer treatment and died week before last!

I believe that Garlits tried the first canopy on a top fuel car, ran one for a while then abandoned the idea. He was very much the Innovator. One of the most memorable was placing the ( rear engine dragster) engine sideways so the crankshaft rotation would be in the direction of acceleration, like a motorcycle. Power had reached a point where the engine's rotational torque was a real issue unloading the left tire.

A little factoid, their daughter for a time worked at a small business in Sperryville, Va about an hour from where I live. Sperryville is a dot on the map at the foothills of the Blueridge mountains. When he 'retired' he and his wife got into their (33/34?) Ford traditional hot rod, struck out on a road trip of the USA. One stop was - you guessed it- Sperryville, Va to see their daughter. Made the local papers. Unfortunately they were long gone from here by the time I got wind of it. Several local papers covered the story.

I got caught in rain with the top down in the miata plenty of times. As long as you're going at least 45-50, 98% of the water gets blasted over/past the cabin by the air passing over the windshield. You only have an issue when you stop. I've driven to an underpass (or stop sign) and then put the top up. In a miata, you can do that from the driver's seat even with the manual top. I've also been caught once or twice in the boxster. That's even easier since it's power and I think you can put the top up at speeds up to 20 mph or something like that (although I'm not going to try it at that speed).
