In my lifetime I have purchased just one pack of cigarettes for myself. I paid one whole quarter for a pack of Camel cigarettes from a machine much like that. There was a big sign over the machine in front of the BX saying no one under 18 allowed to purchase cigarettes. We were the wild bunch, and one at a time each boy skidded to a stop in front of the machine, pumped in a quarter and got a pack. We we all about 10 or 11.

We then pedaled down to the river and started puffing on our new found fun. I smoked two, hated every puff, and as a wild and crazy guy, I threw mine in the river. Never smoked another one. And I don't litter anymore either.

I did often pedal to the store to get a pack for my dad. He would give me 50 cents, and I bought his cigarettes at the counter, and some candy for me.
