I didn't read all the responses probably have already received the appropriate answer.

When I was younger and rode horses they had several horses that died during my time there. The property was large. They would drag the horse to a remote area and burry it. Of course this was in the 70's not sure if legal then but most likely not now.

Every few years we get a dead whale wash up on the local beaches. They get disposed of in various ways. Some get drug back into the water others have been cut up and taken to the local land fill and others have been buried on the beach.

Pretty common in the cattle industry. Disgusting yes. I honestly wish I was not on the ranch a few times.

On the humorous side of the ranch I learned how to make an entire herd boogie. I don't like getting boxed in by large animals. My friend told me always carry a bottle of water half full. When the cattle close in just shake the crap out of the bottle. We were target shooting and the herd decided the range area was a good place to graze and sit down. I was changing targets and the herd was making me a bit uneasy. Shake the bottle!!! Cows think its a rattlesnake. Its a sight watching 75 cows run and dance all at once.

Stillwater, OK is the home of Oklahoma State and they have a large veterinary school. From small animals like pets, to large farm animals. Part of any vet school is necroposy. Basically, and autopsy, only on an animal, not human. Some ranchers do indeed bring in a dead or dying horse or cow or buffalo or whatever. They will put the animal down if it is not yet dead, and see why it died. They have a LARGE incinerator to dispose of the remains.

One of my friends was going to school there for a while and worked in that area. He had several gruesome stories. The Oklahoma City zoo had a baby rhinoceros that the mother rejected right away. They were trying to hand raise it and it dies after a few days. They sent it up to the school for a necroposy. It had a defective heart, and a hole between the two main chambers. He said everyone there wanted to keep the skin for some boots but the zoo vet was there and made sure all the rino parts were returned to the zoo for burial. They did not want any a parts on the market at all.
