Jeff, he already has a .270 barrel that I had posted about getting more info on a couple years ago here. He is looking for a stock and scope for it now. It has a Mauser action on a big custom bull barrel. Won't be lightweight really, but should be a very good shooter.

He thinks he needs a Danial Defense or GA Precision (because it looks like a military sniper rifle) unit at which point I tell him he NEEDS a job and he can then get what he wants. Anyone care to guess what he reads in the bathroom?

A .270 would ve perfect. Kind of unusual to see a bull barrel in that caliber - it never caught on as any kind of a competitive match round, nor as a varmint round. Not many "match" bullets out there in that caliber. It's really not all that expensive to get it turned down a bit, if he wants a lighter rifle.

I've always thought Marlin lever guns superior to Winchesters. I've had a few of each, in many different configurations. Still do. Winchester makes what I believe to be the all-time best bolt gun ever made, in the pre-'64 Model 70, and the later USRA produced "classic" reintroduction of it. Yes, their lever guns are considered "classic", more so than the Marlins, but the Marlins are just better in many ways. She couldn't go wrong with a nice 1895...

She is a lever action and revolver kid. Let her loose in the woods with a Marlin slung over her shoulder and a revolver in a nice leather holster and she is set. Would be eve better if the belt that has the holster has loops to hold more rounds. If she were to visit she may never leave your house.

Well, we didn't get a long spoon last year as he used his sister's 30-30. We happened to be at Brownells over the weekend and he tried a few different spoons and for some reason has decided he likes the AK better. He then argued that is has similar energy to the 30-30.

He did find one rifle he really liked that was a good price, but it was in 300 Blackout. Pricey that ammo is.

The "problem" with AR10s is there is no standard. You have to watch which manufacturer you get the various components from.


Not sure about the AK platform itself but the 762x39 is a fine cartridge, and yes about equivalent in power to a 30-30 (125gr bullet at 2500fps) but better trajectory due to bullet shape. Either my AR uppers or my Howa mini in the caliber will shoot 2moa with cheap steel case ammo, hunting ammo is available, and it certainly has enough oomph for deer/pigs to 200 yards here in Florida which is a long shot for the most part in this area. Cheap and easy to reload for, easy to suppress, easy on the shoulders, and can be had in several light and handy non-EBR type rifles.

I hunted for years using a 16 Ga with slugs. Missed once over 10 yrs and filled my permit each year. We hunted in the woods and on the ground. One of my uncles hunted black powder with his own builds.

They might not be Mulies but, Southern Illinois Whitetails are no slouches.

Now if I were hunting these tiny NoCal Black Tales, yea an AR platform would be enough, LOL.

My advice always is to stay away from uncommon or "fad" calibers. Will be more expensive, less bullet choices and not readily available, i.e. when you forgot your ammo on a trip. When I bought my first magnum rifle, the short magnums were all the rage and I almost bought into it, but then I read that ammo availability argument in someone's column and it clicked. You know what happened to the short magnums ...

.308 will be fine and if you have to go long range, you can do so with the right scope and a range finder.

That said, it isn't just the rifle. The scope is also challenging if you need to cover a wide range of distances. Long range scopes should be >9x but then you can't get a 3x at the lower end of the magnification. For me it ended up being a 3.5-10 and it still is a compromise. Don't like it past 250 yards and close in, I can struggle locating my target through it quickly enough.

The steel jacketed surplus ammo Bell used was a critical part of that success.

Unless you plan to hunt in the West at ranges over 200 yards, these discussions are pretty academic IMHO.

I have hunted my entire life with a .30-06 in the midwest (well...except for the 8mm Mauser I had when I was 14....that would nearly knock me on my ass....). Taken plenty of deer. Are there are any of those deer that I would not have gotten if I was armed with a .30-30? Nope.

You guys know I play with a lot of oddball, obsolete calibers, and often hunt with them. When I used to travel a good deal to hunt, however, I stuck to the "standards" - .30-'06, .375 H&H, and .458 Winchester Magnum. One can find any and all of those in any Third World 7-11 store. And, well, sometimes upon entering the Third World, the god damned customs agent takes your ammo. Because he can. Best to be able to buy some "locally".

The only scopes on any of my big game rifles these days are 1.5-4x, and I cannot remember the last time I turned one up over 1.5x. Nothing worse than having something surprise you at closer than expected range, bring the rifle up, and see nothing but fur through your 9x scope. Scopes are for aiming the rifle, after the game has been identified, no more, no less. It really doesn't take much magnification to do that.

Where we hunt you might shoot 25 yards or 300and a couple times when I go through the thickets I only take a revolver. If he ends up with a medium powered rifle he will be limited to 150ish yards so not much of a scope would be needed. That said, my daughters first deer was 155 yards with a Skinner peep on her 30-30.

Since she is off to AmeriCorps he may just use her Marlin this year again.

Now, if it were me getting my first rifle it would be a Model 760 Carbine in 30-06.

I suppose if he ends up with the AK, maybe a Palmetto?, he can use dad's custom 6mm for longer range. That thing has little recoil because it is heavy. The guy dad bought it from had it custom built for 500-600 yard match shooting and varmints. The guy then needed money and sold it to dad with a 6x scope for $150 back in the early 80s. I don't know where he finds these deals.

Aigel, I grew up using a 760 with a 4x scope but it had flip off mounts for close in stuff. Never, ever lost its zero flipping the scope.

Heck, maybe I should get a 760 and the boy can use my -06 semi-auto. :)

OK, so the season is over and I have a monster on my hands.

Before season started he shot the 6mm and loved it. During the season he used that when we were sitting. Then he decided that it was too heavy to carry through the woods with the Monte Carlo stock and big bull barrel. He traipsed through the woods with dad's 760 carbine and had no issues carrying it a couple miles. He did see some deer at 150 yards but they were in the direction of the people we were driving the deer towards so he did not shoot.

The next morning he used the 760 again and shot at, but missed a big doe at 225 yards. I asked him if it had much recoil and he said not too bad. It is a 7 pound 30-06 shooting 150gr Nosler ballistic tips.

All is well and good, Palmetto had a good deal on a black Friday AK he can carry in the woods and plink with. He said he will sit on the point with the 30-06 or 6mm, but he likes the bolt action (FN) on the 6mm better and the 6mm has a ranged scope out to 550 yards. It is point blank at 250 for white tail and is set on that most of the time. He said he may get a 6mm or .243 some day when he has enough money since he does not know the PSA is coming for Christmas.

The kicker is, and it really pains me to say this, he does not like his sisters Marlin lever action 30-30. I am not sure where this came from, where did I go wrong? :)

I carry a Savage Weather Warrior or whatever it is called now, stainless with a black poly stock. Mines chambered in 338 Win Mag for elk, but it isn't too heavy.

My son (15) carried my old BAR in 30-06 this year, but we did not see anything to shoot.

Sounds like you had a good time with your son, that is what matters to me.

My Savage weighs about 11.5lbs with the scope on. 12FV, 26" heavy barrel in 223. So front heavy that when I put it on my Caldwell sled I have to use a bungee cord on the back end to keep it from tipping forward under its own weight.

We always have a good time whether we get anything or not. His favorite time is walking the woods, whether driving or still hunting. Dad, his brother and cousins are all involved. The daughter did not get a chance to go this year, but she usually does.

The 760 has an 18.5" barrel and is very accurate.

Dad's is like this one and I would trade him in a heartbeat any of our rifles for it.

Our hunting is a bit different here in CO as it is all walking, some sitting, more walking. This year we were in a new unit so that was interesting.
